Home Theatre people, what is your opinion on this?

Ok, so I'm just sitting here browsing the internet and I vernture over into Hot Deals for the first time in a few months. Bad idea. Now I want to get this and these. It will end up costing $350 shipped.

Now I don't know anything about home theatres, so would this little setup sound alright? I'm going to have it in my dorm room for a while and then this summer use it at a house that I'm going to be living at. Also, I have a center and two rear speakers and a sub that I can already use to make a 5.1 system, so would this be a good deal on a decent system or do you have any other recommendations for anything?

I think it'd sound great, but I'm no home theater buff. That's a great looking receiver though.

You could do much worse. The main concern is that if the speakers are not designed to work together, the you may have weird "ambience". You may not be able to localize the sound properly. Still, it's better than nuthin :D

In the future you can buy two more speakers, and that should do it.

You could do worse. I would be worried about the center matching the new floorstanding speakers, but I don't think it'll sound esp. bad. Especially when you consider the price.

Oh yeah, and they will be way too big for your dorm room, unless you're in a suite or something.

I'm wanting really powerful, because that is what my neighbors have and it drives me nuts so now I can fight back. How would these things sound by themselves? Would they have decent bass without the sub?

If you want bass to really bother your neighbors, go with the cheapest sub from HSU Research

I don't think those Polks can produce enough heart stopping bass to bother to really shake your neighbors dishes...but the HSU can

Yeah, I kinda did that route. Let me give you a suggestion, save money buy better stuff that's smaller for now. I've had speakers that weight 100 lbs each and I move every May. It sucks ass.

On of my roommates had a set of energy bookshelf speakers and a Denon stereo (read NOT home theater) receiver and they really impressed me. They sounded great and had really good power for bookshelf speakers. You might want to go that route for a dorm room.

I don't know how much bass those will have. A sub would be better. Movies will not sound right though unless your center channel speaker is matched to those mains. I would buy a matching center channel speaker or buy something that matches your existing center. This is probably the most important aspect of a decent HT setup...Well, besides it not being Bose.

Ok, I'm planning a day trip tomorrow. If I place my order online in tomorrow morning and request that I be able to pick it up at the closest Circuit City (which I checked and they do have in stock), will they have it ready to go by tomorrow afternoon to pick up?

Yeah, it would kind of be like having two 5 feet tall speakers inside of your small dorm 'suite'. ;)

I'm not too worried about it, as I will be moving out this summer. I want to have something nice to go in the living room though when I do move out.

Question: Let's say for the time being I were to just use these speakers with no 5.1 surround, and get the rest of the setup this summer when my birthday rolls around. Will I be dissapointed with them until then, or do you think they would make a great 2.1 (I'll prolly still use my sub) system.

I'll vouch for the HSU STF-2. I got mine from ebay for 364.99. As for the Polk's I don't like them so much. Only 100 watts per channel and sh1tty frequency response. I personally bought axiom m60ti's and an onkyo sr601 receiver.

My center is just some RCA 5.1 combo deal that we had, nothing spectacular. They are rated 100 watts each, but like i said i don't know anything about home theatres.

You probably won't be dissappointed with them. I think for the price you're getting a pretty decent system. They will probably hold their own against cheaper 5.1 systems in the bass dept. but i don't think they'll be able to compete with middle to higher end subwoofers.

Ok, I think I've just about convinced myself. I think my neighbors will thank me for not buying a sub for it just yet. :p

The 412s is an okay reciever I use to have one before I got my h/k430.

For the price it sounds nice but can not drive that hard. The bass isnt that strong either. Other than that...besides a non timbre matched set, you will suffice.

The main sale for this receiver is the power. It's got 100watts per channel. That's what you want if you're looking for a good system. However, my Kenwood has 50 watts per channel and I've been more than happy since I have a 100watt powered subwoofer to pick up the slack. Since I'm in an apartment, I'd never need anything more....I'd get kicked out if I had it anyhow. :p
