Home theatre in a box

I'd like to buy a surround sound "home theatre in a box" stereo system as a gift for my father. My budget is about 6 beans. I know all the audiophiles out there will scoff at this, but that's it; $600. Don't need a TV or DVD, just 6 speakers, including a powered sub.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Do you also need a 6-channel amp / receiver for under $600 total? If not, I think there are some good speaker/sub sets from Energy at that price. Just stay away from KLH.

I have seen some Kenwood 500-watt "home threater in a box" packages that goes for $300-400 bucks... those have pretty good sound and quality for entry level...

The package includes the receiver, 5 speakers and a sub (but probably not a powered-sub)...

i got a kenwood htb-504 a few months ago, it rocks....sounds very good, looks good and so far, is solid as a rock...

As was said, take a look at the Energy Take 5.2 system.

It'll blow any home theater in a box system that Best Buy or CC sells out of the water (for the price of course).

The only way to go for you is the Energy Take 5. If you can afford the newer 5.2, go for it - if not, get the 5, it's just as good. You should be able to pick it up for about $450. Get a receiver separately for another 150-200. Good brands are Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, Harman Kardon, etc. Make sure it has DTS, that's all your dad will need.
