home theatre buffs help me decide....

Okay I need help deciding what package I should go for. The room size I'm putting these in is about 16ftx14ft. Not a huge room but they might go in a larger room because we will be moving within a year. So I don't want to get a setup too small.

The Fluance package was hand picked and isn't sold as a package. I've been told this is the way to go and not to buy packaged stuff. The downside is the fluance doesn't include a receive while the Cambridge Newton set does. However there is a BIG price difference and I will have plenty of money left over for a receiver if I choose the Fluance setup.

Need some input though. I just don't want to rush into the fluance package if the cambridge is alot better. I haven't shopped for home theatre stuff in a long time.

Fluance Package : $720 shipped

I have the sx-htb set from fluance along with 2 S-V6's for surrounds making the 2 surrounds from the sx-htb the rears for 7.1

My new SVS pb-10 isd should ship late this week. (replacing the dayton 10" sub from parts express)

When I was looking at recommendations for low budget home theater I saw a lot of recommendations for the sets from fluance, but I didn't remember seeing any recommendations for the other speakers they sell. (looking at hometheaterforum and avsforum)

I think if you're going to spend $700 on speakers you can get a lot better than what fluance offers. I think the av set is amazing for $200 and the sx set is worth the extra to bring it up to $260, but I really don't think I'd go with fluance on a higher budget.

I think something along the lines of paradigm would be a better option for your price point. There are a ton of speaker companies I've heard recommended though... but cambridge doesn't come to mind... maybe that's a good set... I don't know if I'd want a 75 watt sub if I'm paying over a grand. It seems like the specs on the cabridge speakers are pretty close to the sx-htb set even.

There's tons of info on hometheaterforum and avsforum about speaker recommendations. I think you should go over there if you haven't already.

If you decide on the $700 fluance set you picked out and want a reciever for around $300 to $400, you might want to go the route I did and get a used Harman-Kardon from harmanaudio as the seller.

edit: through ebay

They sell the factory refurbished units Harman-Kardon, Infinity, and JBL get for various reasons. You might be able to get an avr-330 in that price range which would be a really nice buy in that price range.

I hope this helped a little, I know I'm really a noob at most of this stuff. Good luck whatever you choose.

thanks for the info. Paradigm is just way too expensive for me though. There is a local place that sells paradigm but they are WAY high on EVERYTHING they sell.

heck even used paradigm stuff on ebay isn't cheap.

fwiw i agree about HK, the harmanaudio seller on ebay is straight from HK refurb"s witih full warranty> i picked up an avr630 for $600 shipped, to go with my klipsch synergy (3 series, 2x F3, 1 C1 and 2x S1)

sounds good.

Yeah, I was probably a bit off on the paradigm recommendation... I know there's some good companies out there where you can get a really nice speaker set for under $1000.

$1000 range is kinda tough to get a good set with reciever.

Most of the time I read stuff people posted on $1000 range questions, the responses would generally recommend maybe getting a good reciever and then just the front mains and maybe a center right away for $1000. That way later on you can add a sub and surrounds as money allows. That didn't seem like a good option for me though, since I knew I wanted a full set right away.

I don't know about the fluance subs. I've never heard them recommended as far as I can remember, and it's not a big deal to get a sub from the same place you get the speakers since it doesn't have to be timbre matched like you want the speakers.

I know I'm getting a new sub from svs and it sound like I didn't like my dayton 10", but if you end up with a tight budget and are looking for a nice sub, I really recommend it. Here It's on sale for $99 right now and I was really impressed how nice it sounded for the money. The guys at hometheaterforum recommend it a lot for people on a budget and I think they're right.

The only reason I'm getting rid of it is SVS came out with a "budget" sub for a $399 introductory price that's now $429 PB10-ISD and at the same time, a buddy of mine (who chose a paradigm 2.0 setup initially) wanted to add a cheap sub. He's buying mine for $75 so I'm happy.

Sorry I'm rambling. I hope you don't get as addicted to HT stuff as I got, or if you do, enjoy it heh.

Edit:

I was looking over at avsforum to see if I could find some good brands for low end sets and rockets are definately recommended a lot. Here

This might be the best deal right now

5.1 ELT system with a Kenwood 7100 reciever and dvd player for $999

Or you could get the 5.1 ELT system and add your own reciever (HK etc.) and still be around $1000

Edit#2:

Another places to look might be Axiom although a little higher price

Oh, and if you decide you might want to get something cheaper for now and save up for later (yeah right) you might want to check out onkyo htib sets. Some people end up going that route when they find out they can get a pretty nice 5.1 set with reciever for $400 to $600

Didn't see that one Tiles2Tech, I think that may be your winner if you're willing to add a reciever to that price. I did A LOT of research into SVS subs and the PB-10ISD definately seems like a winner just like their older models. I can't wait until I get mine next week (hopefully). It's going to be REALLY hard to beat that combo below $1500 when you get a good reciever added to those.

The SVS is has an very flat frequency response and goes down to the upper teens for frequency response. That set should blow away those setups you were thinking about.
