I finally am setting up my AVR240 and Velodyne Front row speakers.
So far I have connected my Sony DVD to the Coax 1 on the HK, and my Xbox through the Optical 1. The problem I am having is with my TV. It is a cheapo 27" Sylvania from Sams Club. For audio output it has a digital Coax. I got a Coax cable and ran it from the TV to the reciever, and then set the reciever to Video 1/Coax 2. No matter what mode I set the reciever to, I don't get any sound. I even tried hooking the TV up to the reciever with regular composite cables but I still don't get any sound. Anyone have any advice?

Are you sure the TV's digital out doesn't have to do with a built in DVD player...that's usually not a general audio out. I own a AVR-435 so I should be able to help you with any issues

Nope, no built in DVD on the TV.
There is an audio button on the remote and I have the options of "Main", "SAP", or "MONO". Changing those does nothing.

You map your video inputs to their digital sound inputs.

What is making sound? TV or speakers? What source are you trying to play for video and for audio?

Agreed with spidey, just open up the manual and look at their layout of inputs/outputs. I've got the HK AVR 335, which is a similar model I'm assuming, and so feel free to drop me a PM with any questions you have.

I am not running any video though the reciever, my DVD and Xbox are going straight into the TV. I have a Coax from DVD to Coax 1 Input, and Optical from my Xbox to Optical 1 Input. Both of those work fine.
I can get sound from the TV's speakers, but when I turn those off, and run it though the reciever I get nothing. Do I need to have the video going though the reciver to get the sound to work?

No you don't need to run video.

OP I think that output will only work if you are using the built in tuner to receive a digital broadcast. If not, just use the analog stereo output if it has it.

doubtfull it has a digital in.

1) OP - plug the digital outputs of your sources into your receiver (DVD and xbox), use the receiver menus to assign these to the inputs of your choice such as video 1, what have you.
2) Use these inputs to select what you want your receiver to "make sound" with by selecting them with your remote or the front of the receiver, make sure the receiver is set to "autodetect" surround mode.
3) Use your TV input selection to select what Video input you want it to display

Or 4 - read the manual or get a buddy a 6 pack to help.

Yes per your manual

"If you connect this TV to the digital-supported audio devices, you can enjoy much more of the digital
broadcasting programs with the feeling of being at a live program.
Use the DIGITAL AUDIO COAXIAL cable (commercially available) for connection."

You are not using the digital tuner and therefor need to use analog connections. You can use the red and white stereo audio connections and that will work.

Alright, thanks for the help. And BTW I have been looking at the manuals but it hadn't been helping much because I am confused by some of the terminology.

That's ok, the A/V world can do that sometimes.

sTILL SEEMS LIKE IT SHOULD WORK ON ANALOG CHANNELS, OR DOES THE tv JUST 'FORWARD' THE S/PDIF stream direcetly to the receiver, and since there isn't one for analog channel, there's just no audio for the TV to send?

I went over and took a fresh (and closer) look. There input on the back of the TV are- Component, Composite and S-Video. The ONLY OUTPUT is the "Digital Audio" output. Does this mean I am screwed unless I am using "digital" stations?

Yes unless you hook up a VCR or something along those lines with an AV out
