Home system setup issue...

Ok I am redoing my home network and adding a new fileserver and a new main PC (for games, writing code, and everyday use). I just ordered two of the dell 2405fpw's for this new setup, one on the server and one on the main pc. The issue I am running into is two fold:

1. I want to use only 1 mouse and keyboard for both systems so I don't have to fumble around between keyboards and mice. (fileserver will run either Win XP Pro or Win 2003 server, and main PC will run Win XP Pro)

2. Both new computers will be rackmounted in 4U server cases and will be positioned about 4-6 feet from my desk off to the side in the rack.

These are two problems I am trying to resolve, but I have never encountered such issues and am a bit lost on what my options are. I would appreciate any help or suggestions on how I could go about solving these two big problems. Thank you very much for your time!

1. KVM. Get a good one. Don't skimp. The cheap ones have problems. I really like the ones by ConnectPro. You only need one monitor, also. It can be switched between the two machines.

2. I don't understand the problem with #2.

Why not just buy one monitor & use a KVM switch ?

(KVM will allow you to hook up two PCs with one keyboard, mouse, & monitor)

I use a KVM for my two PCs...works beautifully.

Already bought the two 2405's today, so going to have them anyways, so might as well use them. So a good KVM can hook up one keyboard and mouse to two computers (each pc with its respected monitor) even if its USB? I haven't owned a KVM before..used one, but never had to hook it up so I am in the dark. Thanks for the suggestions.
