Our neighbors home was broken into today and could have easily been ours. The wife and I would like to install a decent home surveillance system that can be recorded on our home server over our network.

I'd like to get a cheap 4-6 port PoE switch and a couple of PoE cameras. What do you guys recommend for this? Also, what software could I use to record from these cameras to my home server?

video is not going to be a good line of defense to stop a break in as many know most home systems are useless (still they are apt to go for an easier house).

PoE is the way to do it now, simpler cable runs and no transformers.

diysecurityforum and diyalarmforum (add .com to either) are great.

Follow the stickies at the top of the forum you will post in to see what info they want to see in your post, otherwise people will just ignore it.

Budget is going to be the first criteria. Everyone says money is no object, but as soon as the $2000 camera are recommended they get a little choked up.

I am looking to do a comprehesive perimeter / fire system and have a Pan and Scan inside on IP that I can monitor the room that is more or less a hub to my other rooms.

something in the cheaper range as I will be dealing with indoors and room lighting rather than elements, no light and the like.

They still arent cheap.
