Check out paradigm. I just got my Titans and love 'em.
Paradigm Recommended Systems
If I were you, I would check out the Titan-based cinema system.

As for a reciever, try Onkyo. You can pick up a Onkyo TX-DS484 for $300 and it is supposed to be quite nice for the money. Don't let the 55 Watts fool you. That is a more accurate rating than most companies give, so the power in this unit is easily as good as any low-end '100 watt' receiver.

You should definitely go audtion anything before you buy, of course. Musical/HT tastes are so subjective, you need to find something for yourself. The above combo should put you right at your $1500 budget, though.

Well, the JBL's I have listened to all struck me as exceptionally bright. Some sounds (glass breaking, etc) were piercing. It may have been the receiver they were hooked up to, but I can't say I like JBL's.

Check out audioreview. That web site is awesome. You can learn a lot reading there. I would also suggest picking up a couple of audio/HT magazines. They are good reading if you want to learn about different brands/products.

I, myself, am a relative newbie to the mid/hi-fi world. I am learning, and have recently supplanted my computer addiction with a music/HT addiction. Sigh.
