Knife is okay. It's when you have them subdued and you go back to the shop to fetch the hole saw that you risk crossing the line.

If an intruder comes into your home, will taking action with a knife and killing them be considered illegal? I'm wondering this because shooting an intruder is deemed OK under the same scenario.

You have the right to kill or severely injury/subdue anyone who threatens your/family's life in your own home.
This only applies to complete strangers, no wives, brothers, sisters, dog, cat, etc.

The specifics depends on the state, but generally if you ever have to injure someone in self defense, you generally must do so for fear of your life or serious injury.
You should not "kill" in self defense.
IANAL

In 'weird' states like California, some lawyer can spin anything into a civil suit.

fixed.
Sometimes killing a person was unfortunate. As long as you weren't pulling a Dexter, most courts will side with the person living in the home that was invaded.

If someone breaks in my house while I am there the last thing I am going to worry about is 'Will this be too much force?'...it's in one's best interest to immobilize the assailant as quickly as possible should he be accompanied by someone else. Once you have done this, you best bet is to call 911 and secure yourself in case he does have friends outside.

It is mostly semantics, what i am saying is the intent of self defense is not to kill, but to stop. One should not say they "killed" in self defense.

no no no...you left after stabbing him to go get help, it was barely a flesh wound and he needed first aid. When you came back you aren't sure what happened, but it was a mess.
