I've never heard of simplisafe. This looks like a good option to look into. Anyone know if an alarm system like this would help get a discount on home insurance? Or does it have to be something like ADT?

I realize I am not answering OP directly but fwiw my security system consists of ADP stickers from eBay at all entrances and two dropcam cameras. Cost is 15 month. They can be set to alert me based on movement but not to the finite control one would get from a security system (ie any movement triggers the event).

On the plus side although no cops will be called I can keep an eye on my house at 720p definition and the system automatically includes off site storagewith that monthly fee and it is accessible on a phone--reliably and well. Have been very happy with it since getting it in place last fall.

I pay $15 a month for central station monitoring, but it's optional and I can end it whenever I want. However, I paid in full for the equipment and installation.

Simplisafe was also new to me so I did some research just now. It seems that you can get a discount on home insurance when you use their monitoring. Amounts are extremely small though as they currently lack Fire/smoke detectors. Another thing they lack right now is a glass breaking sensor. It seems that they are pretty slow about coming out with the new sensors (their facebook page is full of people asking about when they come out and they just keeping saying "soon")

The OP's requirements seem very reasonable. I want some sort of alert/alarm system, but I don't need a monitoring service, I just need it to let me know if something is going on.

It shouldn't be that difficult to do, you'd think some of the companies out there would have already put a package with cameras and software out there for this purpose.....

To have it work with your phone its says you need to pay for the monitoring service.

Anyone have any experience or suggestion on self installed home security systems that don't run on a lane line and does not require a monthly fee?

I want to get a system for my home, got a couple of quotes from companies like ADT and alert alarm and their installation and monthly monitoring fees are pretty pricey. so I want to look into the option of installing my own system and be able to monitor or at least be notified by phone if the alarm trips. I don't have a laneline at home, and I do not plan on getting one, so I am looking for something that don't requires it.

It shouldn't be that difficult of a task. I can't seem to find anything either. What about camera devices?

I'm trying to figure out what that even is, looks like some kind of magnetic coil that activates a bullet or something?

I would imagine some DIY systems may have email capability? If yes you could have it send an email to a dedicated email account on your phone that has a distinct loud notification. Something fully custom Arduino based could work too and be less limited.

I personally like hand to hand combat and recently added these to my arsenal.

Definitely some necro action, but I just ordered and installed a Simplisafe kit myself yesterday. Just as an update they do now have GlassBreak and smoke detector alarms. Along with freeze, monoxide and water detectors.

Nice. I may have to go this route for the next house. My local PD's response time is pretty pathetic.

if you can find a used ADT or similar system online for cheap, grab it. install it in your house(it isn't too difficult if you have the right tools) and bam, run the system like it would normally be ran without it dialing out to ADT.

also, dropcam.com
