Home Schooling: Thoughts?

I am considered a highly qualified teacher in my district and I home schooled 2 of my children for a time. I'll do it again if I have to!

The reason was that our neighborhood schools were overcrowded, and even the best schools struggle when kids are packed in like sardines. Once more schools were built to serve the thousands of people who keep moving to our area, I sent them back and went back to work myself (at my own neighborhood school, natch).

I think it all depends on the reason you home school. I want my children to learn how to learn and ask questions... and I want them to do it in an environment that is condusive to positive peer relationships. I don't want them to be herded like cattle by overburdened teachers.

Um no it actually isn't. A 10th grader that I know that goes to public school is having TONS of problems with gangs right now. They have threatened to kill about 3 people there, and they bring knives all the time. School is very dangerous.
I hope your friend gets out of that place and goes to another school. There is violence everywhere - I didn't say there was no danger at all in school.

Simple article: Schools are the safest place for kids.

Some data, large PDF file
Students are twice as likely to be victims of serious violence away from school...From July 1, 1999, through June 30, 2000, there were 32 school-associated violent deaths in the United States.
Of all the school children in the US, only 32 died in a year. I'll give you an assignment: how many died at home (fires, accidents, murder, etc.)? Heck, go ahead and divide your number by the ratio of time kids spend at home compared to school. You'll see a number far higher than 32 deaths.
