I just had a cable modem installed with @home yesterday. Now my system will freeze up at times. The last time it did it I was watching a news video. It also happened when I turned on the printer. Seems strange, anyone have any ideas?

In all seriousness check your interrupt settings, mobo and os, and see if the NIC is conflicting with anything (IRQ). A nic is a serious I/O device and really should have its own interrupt. I've been having trouble with my wife's 2000 server box, 2000 would just freeze for about 30 seconds and then run fine or hard lock. Guess what was sharing IRQ 11?

Every card was using the same IRQ. NO WONDER IT DIDN"T WORK!!!! Damn intel motherboards 🙂

He installed the software but counldn't get the modem online. I did a power shutdown and restart on the modem this morning and got it running. But now it locks at times. tried to download a file and it lock after a couple of mins. Plus the others mentioned in first post. I'll check for conflicts etc. Any other ideas.

I have a USB NIC connecting a DSL modem, essentially the same hardware setup, and it works fine. Possible issues include your MB's support for USB, and whether updated driver and/or BIOS needs to be installed; MB and OS configuration of USB bus; whether a PCI adapter is in the PCI slot that generally shares PIRQ with USB bus (slot 4, I vaguely recall); your OS's support for the modem's driver (may need an update). The last two are the most probable, since the first two would likely cause it to not work at all.
 
@Home software is nothing good and everything bad...and I'm a tech for them so trust me on this. Call tech support, have them walk you through a total removal of ALL @Home software.

The USB interface was never intended as a network connection. Maybe USB 2 will be ok, but I alway recommend going with an internal nic over a USB adapter. It solves half of the system conflicts I tech. (Removing the software takes care of most of the rest.)

Can I use the network without using the sofware? I like the speed of the cable over my ISP.
Will they install a different modem if the usb isn't working correctly?

Yes, you can run without the software. Actually it's really easy to set up the network properties to use it without running the @Home software. Setting up the news and email settings is a little trickier, but we can walk you through it.
 
Sorry about the posts. It seems like this thing has a mind of it's own right now.
Anyway, I uninstalled the @home sofware and am able to get back online as of now. I left the @home networking and @home usb ethernet driver installed for now. I can't log on to the @home site without freezing EI? I was able to get to anandtech? Haven't tried any others as of yet.
It seems to be stable at this time (haven't crashed in about 10 min) what else do I need to look at. I am completely new to networks, cable etc.

PM, how would I setup to rec. email etc.?

email and news are harder because you need to find the name of your domain. This can be easy if the helpful @home technicians wrote it down for you somewhere. In my case, they gave me a yellow piece of carbonized paper with every network setting that I could ever want to know on it when they completed my install. It was written there. For me, it's "mail.ftclns5.co.home.com" => which is my domain name here in Fort Collins, CO.

So search through your paperwork and see if you can turn it up. If you can then go into your favorite email reader and type this address into the pop3 mail settings (Netscape is "edit -> preferences -> mail servers).

If they didn't write it down, you have two choices: you can either call them, wait on hold for a bizillion hours, argue with the tech support person as to why you need this, argue some more, and then they *may* give it to you. Or, you can try and find it out yourself. If you opt for the latter then I recommend following the instructions here.

BTW, this link to Practically Networked Home is an excellent resource and you may want to look around the site and bookmark it since Tim has put together a lot of useful networking information.
 
Thanks PM, I'm still having issues with this setup, locking up etc. I guess it could be hardware conflicts with the usb cable modem. It will run fine for 10 or 15 min. and then just freeze. I have unhooked all items not needed to try to find the problem (printer, scanner, 56k modem)I'm running now to see if it will help.

Here's a kick, when I uninstalled the @home software it took Outlook Express with it. Reinstalled OE and my settings for email where still there. I had the yellow copy you spoke of but I'm sure it's easier this way.

I've disabled com 2 and onboard modem to free up IRQ's and have connected the printer again. So far so good. I'll try the scanner next (usb) and we'll see if it still works.
