Due to network issues, I would like to force one Windows XP Home box to Pro, but I want to do it IN PLACE, without a fresh install.

The articles I've seen aren't clear, and seem to only teach you how to trick a Home installation CD to install as Pro instead.

I find it difficult to imagine someone here hasn't done an in place 'upgrade' from home to pro.

Any advice appreciate.

Oh , and YES I have LEGIT pro license(s) this isn't about piracy, this is about hacking past an artificial upgrade path limitation just to clarify!
 
You aren't going to "trick" a Windows Home Install disk into performing an inplace upgrade to XP Professional. You need to do an in-place upgrade from XP Home to XP Professional using a retail or volume license XP Professional CD, and you'll need a license key for the same type of CD (i.e. Retail or Volume license, depending on the type of Install CD you use).
 
I have a PRO install cd and the necessary license.
Maybe I was just confused but I thought MS did not permit a home to pro in place upgrade installation.

Let me see what happens.

There's no problem doing an in-place upgrade if you have the proper CD and corresponding license key. The versions are very similar and I've never had a problem with that upgrade, although I HAVE met a fellow IT consultant who claimed to have had problems with it. (?)

Just pop in the CD and follow the directions. But you can't do it with an OEM Install disk, which can't do upgrades.
