I just bought a brand new house in April. My office is a 13x12 with canned lighting and 3 solid walls for desk space/storage. On one wall I have a nice large bookshelf. I have a decent solid wood desk with 4 "post" legs that looks more like an antique than a desk.

I would like to upgrade.......

This office will be my wife's recording studio also, so lots of desk space is needed. I have 2 24" Dell LCD's and two laptops that will be on the desk itself (not including my main PC and server that will be behind/on the ground/beside the desk.

I have looked EVERYWHERE and can't seem to find what I am looking for. I would like a large L-Shape desk. I looked at local furniture stores and found really nice SOLID wood desks at $1k on the low end.....but after thought...we don't want to spend that much and really don't need something that nice.

Somewhere in the $200-500 range would be nice. What do you guys suggest?
 
I went to Ikea...once....AND I WILL NEVER GO BACK.

It was CRAWLING with the rudest people I have ever seen....both employees and customers.

I don't get the craze......people really overpay for cheaply made furniture from there?
 
I just spent way too much money on a huge L-shaped, solid wood desk. It was worth every penny, though.

a lot of their stuff isn't overpriced. A lot of it is priced at the right price, cheaper than you'd expect.

You might want to try to find Ikea Jerker desks on craigslist. They're really big desks and listed for 100, could be had for much cheaper now.

Otherwise, maybe time to pull out some wood, paint, and table legs?
 
Seriously, build what you need yourself. If you can't muster it or don't have the tools, hire a carpenter or invite some friends over and DIY. It'll be as strong as you want it, support what you need, and have every feature you would want in a desk. For a lot less than $1,000.

hiring a carpenter will end up a hell of a lot more than $1000.

this route is a very bad idea if you dont know what you're doing.

Ikea makes a lot nicer stuff for the money than those office supply stores. I've had my Ikea Jerker desk for almost five years now and I've taken it apart and put back together three times. Even through that it barely looks worn. Try doing that with the desk of the same price from Staples. It's not the most attractive desk, but it is very functional and has held up amazingly.
 
There's about 9 zillion different combinations that can be made from pieces shown here.

I configured my desk, drawers, and return from there but purchased the individual pieces from Comet Supply because of lower prices and free shipping.

Says the guy that wants a very large desk for $500 or under.

Ikea is hardly overpriced. Some of the items are more or less disposible, but many are rather high quality compared to the typical Rooms to Go / City Furniture stuff.
