Home Networking: What Protocols To Use?

I would be interested to hear what the best/fastest set-up is for home networking. I started a while back (not knowing anything) with enabling all the standard Microsoft protocols (NETBUI, TCP/IP, and IPX), and setting NETBUI as the default since it seemed to give the fastest transfer rate for sharing files. I'm using a cheap Linksys 10/100TX hub.

I use the network to play games and share files mainly. The only annoying thing is that I get disconnected from my dial-up internet (no broadband here yet) when printing to the networked printer (HP 932C). I wonder that it might be caused by either my network settings/shares, or some other program like Zonealarm (or something).

Use TCP/IP for internet connection sharing and use NetBeui or IPX for file sharing on your internal network... This configuration gives the best security...

Install as few protocols as possible, cuz unused protocols will only slow things down...

If you need it, Steve Gibson, creator of "ZoneAlarm" has a great tutorial on Netbui and unbinding it from tcp/ip
