Hi there,

I just setup a small home network where Win2K is serving as my main computer. Everthing is setup to be shared, along with the correct workgroup. Here's my problem: My computer with Win98 as it's OS has problem accessing the Win2k computer. The Win2K computer keeps asking for a password. But the computer with Win2k has no problem acessing the Win98 computer with no password require. I did not setup a password in Win2K so why is it asking me for one? Also, in an vain atttempt to fix the problem, I made sure that the networking feature in win2k is set so that it can be fully access by other computer (for the win98's) with no password require. However, again it is asking for a password when the Win89 computer tries to accessing it. I see both computer on the network.

I am tring to setup a shared internet connection with Win2K serving as the main gateway. However, I can even access it through a Win98 system. Can someone please help me solve this frustrating problem...and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thank You for all those that help.

First make sure that the 98 machine is enabled for "Client for Microsoft Networks" also turn on File/Print sharing and I assume the workgroups are the same. Now when you restart the 98 machine it should ask for user name and password just put in for exampe, "User". With no password press enter to login. You now should be logged in as "User".

Now with Win2k goto Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management then Local Users/USERS. Right click and click New User. Now for user name you would put the user name you assigned to the 98 machine. Full name and description you can fill out according to you. For password leave it blank. Uncheck "User must change password at next login and Password never expires. Now, you should be all set. The 98 machine shouldn't ask for a password now. And make sure you click on the drives you want to share/be mapped and make a new share for it.

The user name for the Win98 machine MUST be the Microsoft log-in name and NOT the computer name itself..

On the Win2000 machine, go to Control Panel -> Users & Passwords -> Advanced tab -> click Advanced under "Advanced User Mgmt." -> Click on Users folder. If "Guests" has an X on it then...right-click on Guest, -> Properties -> uncheck "Account is disabled" -> Click Apply. That should do it.

Enabling that guest account is a really bad idea if the computer is permanently hooked to the internet via cable modem/DSL/whatever. It creates a big security hole that is easily exploited. The best thing to do is to create an account on the Win2k machine for the Win98 machine with the name matching the login name of the Win98 machine. The passwords do not necessarily have to match. It is also a very good idea to make sure ALL of your accounts on the Win2k machine have passwords, since unpassworded accounts are also easy targets for malicious hackers. :)
