Home networking problem

Hello everyone. I've been reading some posts here over the past day or two, you all seem like nice and helpful people. Anyway, maybe you could try figuring this one out...
I have a cable modem that runs into my Netgear RP114 router and then to the Netgear FA311 NIC in my Win ME(XP Pro tomorrow) 866Mhz PIII 256megs SDRAM computer. The internet connection usually works well but quite frequently I will seem to momentarily lose my interenet connection. I suspected the cable modem but it seems to work during these and I also am not able to access the router configuration in my browser. Then 30 seconds to a minute later the connection comes back and any webpages I have requested and the router configuration will all come up at the same time. Can anyone explain this, and how to possbily fix it? Thanks a lot.

It can be an ISP problem that does not relate to your system.

However, if it is your system you can try to isolate the problem to find out what component is mainly contributing to the phenomenon.

1. Connect the Cable Modem to one Computer.

If it is working OK.

2. Connect Cable Modem to Router, and Router to one computer (the one that worked before).

If it is working OK.

3. Connect the rest of the Network?s computers one at the time.

4. Have a good luck.

For tomorrow:

Setting Network in XP Pro.

Sharing in XP Pro.

Just wanted to let you know if you didn't already know. Most of the cablem modem users will be experiencing some issues due to the fact that EXCITE@HOME is closing their network down. Comcast along with several other local providers made a deal with @HOME to keep the network running for another 3 months (only 2 months are now left). As such, almost all cable modem users will be experiencing problems related to people being transitioned to differrent cable modem backbones not run by Excite@HOME. Even if your providere did not use Excite@HOME you may experience problems due to the fact that people are being placed onto your backbone. Also, Comcast just purchased AT&T Broadband, which includes their cable modem users. I am not sure if that affects you either, but if you are an AT&T cablem modem user, you may eventually experience some issues, espeically since Comcast is planning on migrating all its users (who were on the Excite@HOME backbone) onto their newly purchased network. Comcast may also allow new services as well to these users as Comcast previously allowed static IP's which AT&T would not allow.

i also have an rp114 router hooked into a terayon cable modem.my connect has been fine with the router connected till last friday or saturday when i started to see large packet loss cuaseing my browser to hang.im still searching the net for a solution.the pl last around 30 seconds and comes almost like clockwork every 5-6 minutes..when i take the router off and go modem to pc none of these problems happen.
im wondering if the cable company (in my case optimum online) has a way to cycle somthing to interrupt cable service for i bit to piss those ppl useing routers off?
any ideas anyone?

Your cable modem provider should not be able to detect whether or not you have a router connected or just a single PC. They will both bee seen from the outside network as the same (unless they specifically port scan the computers and expect to get a response from certain ports, but a software firewall could give them the same answer as the router does (which should be none) and thus they would be interupting the service of a proper system, and thus at falt and should be sueable for disruption of service and or breach of contract (or you be entitled to a reimbersement of the money you pay them for the amout of days you have bad service). Anyway back to the topic, I guess its something with your router. I am not familiar with that particular one, but you might want to see if there are any new firmware upgrades for it and or go to their support site and ask for help there.

well i guess i was wrong all around..it turns out that one of my computers on the network was infected with nimda virus🙁.while i was useing my pc the others were also online and the virus was at work doing its thing .i scanned all the computers on the network, deleted all the files or had nortons do it for me .rescanned for anything else and went online and havent had a problem since.i hope this holds up .thanks for the responce though.
