Home Networking Problem

I connected a WinXP Pro desktop to a WinXP Home Edition laptop with a crossover cable, as follow the setup walkthrough that I found on a few networking website, my problem is after joining them to a same workgroup and identical computer name, in the desktop, I can't see the laptop computer name in the workgroup but can ping each other. On the laptop I can see the desktop computer name in the workgroup but when double clicking it will show "network path is not found". When I typed \\(desktop)computername\ it will show the same error, but if I access using the IP address, I can.

Sharing file also encounter problem, the laptop can't see the files shared out by the desktop but the not the other way round.

Any help would be much appreciated.
