Home Networking: How Can I Create A Sophisticated VPN / Layer?

Hi,

I'm interested in purchasing a dedicated file/network server to handle the following tasks:

* Ability to place Windows 7 / Vista / XP Accounts in the network and login to a specific account on any computer running windows
* Create a private VPN to access my home file server from anywhere in the world

Where do I start? Do I make a custom server build and have it running on my basement? I will appreciate any topics/discussions to direct me in the right path of setting up such a network.

If what you want is the ability to create centrally managed user accounts that can be used on any pc then you need active directory. I dont deal much with home stuff, but a quick google reveals that windows home server can accomplish this and more.

You would also want to setup a VPN if you want to access it from outside of your network.
