Home Network

What do I need for a home network where I can link all the pcs in my house.

I have a router.
I'm not sure what else I need, do I need any software?
eg. Microsoft Server

thank you all.

Hi,
If you have a router, all the computers need NIC's [network cards that fit into your PCI slots inside the computers]
Then you need to have cables [Cat5 or 5E or 6 patch cables] to connect the NIC's to the router.
If you have any MS operating system from Windows 98 upwards, then you don't need any other software to get connected.

Once you get that lot of hardware together, post back.
If you are running WinXP, then you can run a wizard that just about does everything for you [allegedly].
That can be found in control panel/network setup wizard

yes, eventually (haha).
You will have to make sure that the 'zero' wifi service is set to automatic if you do find a problem.
Is your router a wifi one?

Have you installed/enable Wifi on your laptop?

Are you using WPA encryption? Otherwise the ppl over the road will be able to tap into your connection, and the hacker round the corner from you can see what you are dl/ul

I've got 128bit WEP on, not letting any sucker tap into my network!

Someone mentioned that I should disable 'windows Xp simple file sharing'. I'll try this.
Thanks I'll check that website out aswell.
