This is a really stupid question but I know very little about networking at all.

I have cable modem access at home and would like to share the internet connection with a comp in another room. I read JackMDS's very helpful post about how to do this and I think I may be be able to pull it off. However, my father is being insistant on one thing. The other is at the other end of my apartment and he will not allow a cable to lie on the floor. Pulling up the carpet is a huge hassle, (and I think the cable may be a littke think for that).

Sooo is there anyway to share the connection without running a cable? Any reasonable inexpensive way. (Other then setting up a wireless network looks way out of my budget)

I get a brand new laptop if I can figure out a way to do this, but it just doesn't seem doable.

thanks

Or, if you are willing to spend a little extra money, 803.11b wireless. This can be a little expensive (about $400 for the whole setup) but it's really neat to surf the 'net on a laptop while sitting out on the front porch during the summer. There's a certain magic about it. And it's more than fast enough for a cable modem connection - even when you are pretty far away from the transmitter. Right now the laptop that I'm typing this on is on the top-floor of the house and my transmitter is in my basement and I am moving files around the network with >5Mb bandwidth. I've found that I can get about 300-400ft away from the transmitter before the bandwidth starts to noticebly degrade. It's expensive, but it's really cool. :)

In addition to phoneline and low-bandwidth wireless, I've heard of one solution that uses electrical outlets and the in-house electrical wiring to transmit data. I can't seem to find it during my simple searches right now, but I seem to remember one company made these.

Yes, there's phonejacks in both rooms. (It's possible to use a splitter so I can have a phone in the rooms, right?).

I've been doing research on homePNA and that looks like the cheapest way to go. Is it difficult to set up? I'd be using this with a desktop and a laptop.

thanks,

Yes, I think it is possible. I am using 2Wire products. The HomePortal was a breeze to setup. It is very fast.

I have dsl. I used the HomePortal 100 to network my home. Take a look at their product line; link.
