For years, our computers have only been in the basement of our home. Recently, we did a major home renovation project which gave me a chance to run network (CAT-5), phone, and coax (RG6) to each of the bedrooms on the second floor via Leviton Quickport wallplates. These 3 data cable types are all connected/distributed in a wiring panel up in the attic. Guess that I should say that all BUT the CAT-5 are connected in the attic....
We use cable internet with the gateway and router in the basement. Can I simply connect the upstairs "feeder" CAT-5 cable to the router in the bassement and then use a switch or a hub in the attic to supply internet/LAN to the bedrooms upstairs? If so, are there advantages for using a switch in this scenario? I really don't want to go wireless, so I'm just looking for some good advice on how to best set this wired network up. Thanks!
