home network security setup...what to do?

I've got a small home network consisting of 3 computers, which has recently become the target of some unfriendly activity. I'm going to spend a couple hundred bucks on this problem, but I'm not sure where to begin. I have recently acquired Norton Antivirus, but I'm really irritated by the DoS activity I seem to constantly be running into while in chatrooms(something Antivirus can do nothing about). This, according to others I know on the net, is becoming a more frequent problem.I'm thinking of a software Firewall. Is this a path that I should follow? What are my other options?

What other types of software/hardware is out there that may fill my needs?

thx for any and all advice!

BTW...
the threats are external. The internal threat is nill(unless I have been sleepwalking and sleepcomputing) LOL. I'm the only person here!

thx again,

Try a nice Firewall/Switch/Router from:

Dlink, Netgear and Linksys.

Wont do anything about DoS attacks though, get a new IP address for your connection.

can/will my ISP do that for me

They should, especially if you can prove your being denied. its real easy on thier end (or should be).

A hardware firewall is more reliable than a software firewall... more secure, as well. There are a number of free software firewalls out there, just do a search in the network forum. Most software firewalls only block incoming OR outgoing information (such as info coming/going from a trojan program). A hardware firewall, however, will make it much harder for that information to get into your computer in the first place.

A firewall, though, won't help for DOS attacks. The only thing (in your price range) that will help that problem is to get another IP from your ISP. You might want to do some searches in the network forums. All of this information is available there and easily found with a simple search.
