Home network question

Hello all, i'm new here, from toronto canada

quick question about my home network:

I have cable high speed internet, and the cable guy hooked my modem up at my fusebox in the basement. I have a router and am getting wireless on my laptop successfully.

Now i want to put my desktop computer on the top level of my house on the net. It doesnt have a wireless card, and even if it did the wireless signal strength would suffer.

What are my best options of the following three (or any new suggestions would be welcome!)

Get a wireless card for the desktop, and get an antenna/signal booster to strengthen signal

run a network cable from the router up through the walls, and into NIC in desktop (painful cause its so far up)

call cable guy and get them to reconnect my modem upstairs (then my signal would be weak in the basement).

any suggestions would be much appreciated!

thanks

d

sorry again, still need help. I only have the one router, so want to configure it with what i have.

so my original post stands!

thanks in advance for any help

Running direct wire is generally the best solution -- short term pain for long-term gain. Either run the coax cable or Ethernet cable.

If you already have cable on the main floor, you could move the modem and router there (installing a splitter if needed) and get more even wireless everywhere (possibly improved with a new antenna). You might also be able to shorten the Ethernet run to the top floor that way.

thanks for the response - i thought of that, though i use the wireless mostly in the basement so the strength is most important down there.

thanks again, gonna buy 30 ft of cable and do some runnin!
