home network problem

I'm having a problem with my home network. When I am transferring files from one PC to another my transfer speed is between 1 MB/sec and 5 MB/sec. Here is my setup...

Client - Vista Ultimate - onboard nic that is set at 1 Gbps
Server - Windows server 2003 - onboard nic that is also set at 1 Gbps

I have my client and server networked via a gigabit switch with cat 5e cables. Then my switch is connected to my router which is NOT gigabit, and then from there to the internet. The router is being used as my dhcp server.

I'm also running vmware server on my server and vmware workstation and server console on my client. If you need any more information please let me know.

Set the cards to auto negotiate speed/duplex. You can't set one end of a link without setting the other. By hard setting the cards speed or duplex no autonegotiation information is sent and the other end of the link will default to half-duplex.
