Hi, this is my first post here. I was reffered here by a friend and he said you guys can solve any problem, so here it is. I wanna setup a home network to transfer files between computers, as well as share a printer. Both computer are running SP2, and one is running Windows XP Porfessional and the other is running Windows Media Center Edition (2002 I think). The media center edition PC is directly connected through an ethernet cable (it's in the office room, where the cable modem, the wireless router, and the other router (used for vonage) are kept). the other computer is downstairs, connected wirelessly to the Internet through a wireless adapter. The printer I want to share is conneceted to the Media Center PC.

Basically, how can I connect these computers so I can share peripherals and documents, photos, and music between them?

Thanks a bunch!

Welcome to AT Forums.

Since all of the devices are conncected to the same Wireless Router they are already Networked.

In order to share files and Printers you need to configure all computers for Sharing.

Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what is allowed to be shared.

Basic XP - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/filesharing.mspx

Advanced XP - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040

Vista - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx>

I have a problem, on my Downstairs computer (wireless) I ran the Wireless Network Setup for Windows XP. It told me to save the settings on to a flash drive and install it onto the other computers in my network (which is the office room one, the one that is directly connected to the router). I ran the setup, but a message popped up that said the installation could not be completed because there was no wireless adapter on that computer. How do I fix this? (I don't want to buy another wireless adapter for the office computer too)

Edit: BUMP

That setup you ran and saved is probably just the wireless settings. Basically you need to put both computers in the same workgroup name (they are probably set as MSHOME or WORKGROUP right now) and then follow Jacks instructions on setting up directories to share.

one thing to keep in mind is that some wireless routers dont allow your wireless to play with your wired connections. it creates the wired on 192.168.1.XX and the wireless on 192.168.0.XX

this will create a scenario where you cant even ping/ see/ access your printer or other computer. linksys is notorious for this, and after coming across this with a customers machine i argued via email with the linksys people that you may want to eventually print to a wired network printer from the wireless, but they wont say more than its working as intended.

that set up disk you made was only for the wireless settings, not the wired. just go into the settings and do it again from the wired puter.
