Home network - can I speed it up?

I have a Linksys 4 port Router, to which I connect two desktops (one my primary, and the other I use for file storage), and also one notebook.

They are networked to share internet cable as well as a printer and files.

My question - it can take a few seconds for me to access the desktop that I use for file storage - from the other two computers. It has that search Icon in the folder while it looks for the files and then after two or so seconds they list. Can I speed this up by adjusting some settings?

I'm guessing this is slow because the desktop which I am accessing is an old PII 400mhz Gateway.

The speed of the client you're connecting to is a factor, but a bigger factor seems to be the number of files/folders in the directory you're trying to open.
