Where did it come from? What program is running without my knowledge? How do I get rid of it?

Chances are that the @Home software is running :)

It is needed to access the internet with an @Home modem.

Correct! No @Home software is needed, usually just your computer name and IP info is needed to get access to the net over @Home connections, get rid of the @Home software while you can!

hmmm, check to see if files tgcmd.exe and tgfix.exe are on your system, then delete them. they're usually installed by the @home software and may cause this to happen.

one of the advantages of typing in the numbers manually is avoiding @home's (usually outdated) software and of course their dreaded proxy server. which is generally a lot of fun trying to get rid of!

Check to see if you have this dir: C:\Program Files\Excite\platform

I have ATT@Home which uses Excite@Home. The other day when I booted up some program named exshell failed. I had never seen this before so I started looking around and found the above dir with files dated 9/2001. I also found exlaunch.exe in my MS system tools startup. Apparently Excite is trying to load some type of software on my PC without asking me. I'm still investigating what it is.
