Home Gyms: What's a decent machine?

My GF and I are thinking of purchasing a good-quality home gym, but we've got no idea where to start. We want to educate ourselves before we hit a B&M store.

Advice is greatly appreciated...

my dad got a bowflex. i used it for a decent while, and gained 15 lbs of muscle (im pretty small frame). i followed one of the plans that was in the book and had lots of protein. worked very well, but i really dont care about physical fitness much anymore (in terms of bodyfat, etc.) i'm real thin, but am not as defined as when i worked out. good machine, IMO. just remember to work out consistently and eat well to see results.

I would recommend joining a club, because you get access to thousands of dollars of equipment. If you stick with it then soon enough you won't feel insecure about yourself in front of the meatheads, or even at all if you're confident enough. Most of them aren't too intelligent anyway so you're in good shape.

I have to agree with aplefka. I've gone both routes, I used to have a large gym in my old house, and while it was good, there's no substitute for a gym that has millions of dollars in equipment... well, excluding millions of dollars in equipment at home. 😉

The gym I go to, although it costs quite a bit, always keeps the best equipment, and the atmosphere is great there. Your workouts will be much more efficient and targeted. If you do decide that you're going to go with a home gym, I wouldn't go with a machine like the boflex. You should check out John Stone Fitness and take a look at his gym setup, although it will be pretty costly, it will do the job without a doubt.

forget bowflex. If you are really serious, you want to get a power rack/power cage. Now that I'm actually working out reguarly at home and on a pretty strict program, I really wish I had gone that route instead of a machine.
