Home Furnace Guru's -- Need your help

I have a gas furnace that is lighting and then shutting down about 7 seconds later. It repeats this 2 or 3 times.

I followed this troubleshooting guide for a slightly different but very similar ignition control system. It has lead me to believe the flame sensor is bad. My ignition control system is a 50a65-289. This model is no longer made. I need to get a flame sensor that will work with it. It has a single screw mounting plate and the male end of a flat paddle wire connector.

Anyone able to provide some assistance? I'd really appreciate it.


I have a home warranty and the unit will be covered but it costs $60 just to have them come look at it. Then more if the part isn't covered.

I find the same guide on a few sites. Looks to be applicable for your model.


BTW, teh google of "Amana AMS80905CNA" showed a flame sensor on scambay. Don't know if it's the right one or not...didn't go look.

BoomerD I had looked at that guide as well. Still looking like flame sensor. The diagnostic light blinks 3 times which points to pressure switch for induced draft. I will try to rule this out today.

I saw the ebay link as well. $12 seems cheap.

Mine has done something similar and it is because the flame sensor gets dirty. Take it out, take a metal file to it to clean it up real good (may not even look dirty / gunky) put it back in and works just fine.

I cleaned it with steel wool last night. No change.

I had that same problem. It was the pressure switch for me. All I did was lightly blow in the end of the hose to unfreeze it. You will hear it click when you to this. I have the problem becuase I get ice build up in my intake.

If this doesn't work you intake could be plugged. I used a hose and ran it up through the intake hose from the furnace to the outside.

#1. Call Johnstone and see if they know of a subsitute.
#2. Go up a Model year or two and see if the same or similar system is used. Often the mfg won't change the whole kit.
#3. Maybe it's time to upgrade the furnace? There are a lot of tradesmen looking for work.

Looks like it was the pressure switch. I started troubleshooting it this morning when I first got up.
