@Home enforcing 128kbps upload cap?

I'm looking at the upload graphs in WinMX and they are stuck at 16KB/sec...this translates to 128kbps, which is @Home's advertised upload speed. I'm not too happy about it because in the past, some people used to get files from me at 100KB/sec or more...the cap wasn't actually enforced (and it is technically possible to send data UPSTREAM via a cable line at 1mbps or more). Download speed, the more important one, is still unrestrained, but if @Home starts using this cap, then downloading performance from other @Home users will suffer. Must be a RIAA/MPAA conspiracy to kill off file sharing.

I've had Comcast @Home for about 2.5 months. It was 15k/sec or so the second I got it. I take it as a personal affront to my manhood (I had 1mbps upload in nova scotia at 2/3 the price 2 years ago), but I have to deal with it.

Yup, got the cap here too. No way around it, sucks. Used to be able to upload stuff via aim at good rates.

Yup, it's 128 in Chicago too. @home took over MediaOne and my friends who had MediaOne and the higher upload cap were also cut down to 128 as well. Some of my friends in Mass. are on MediaOne and have 256 as their limit. It's just not fair!

I called tech support for another matter (buried cable and the dude cut it!) and asked if the 128 was right and the support guy said that it was the WHOLE network that had it and they would all be adopting it soon if they hadn't already.

Unfortunately, there is no other alternatives to ATT around here so I am stuck w/ my horrible uplaod 🙁

Apparently from a residential perspective, the upstream bandwidth is much harder to manage than the downstream. Thus, cable co's have some pretty low caps. *DSL seems to have higher upload speeds. I guess because phonelines are more predictable?

I'd like to say that's all BS and that the real reason is financial, but, I'd need to know the following: Do backbone providers sell asymetrical bandwidth? IOW, if I order an OC3, can I order it for 1way bandwidth or does it have to be symetrical up/down?

MY reasoning: If the Cable Co's have to have 3Mbit/s downstream for each user, but are capping at 128Kbit/s upstream, there's almost 2.9Mbit/user upstream being unused that the cable co's are paying for? However, if they can actually buy the bandwidth one way, then, this is probably why the caps are the way they are.

MediaOne is actually 300kbit upload.. however using the college lan Rox0rs.. 155mbit to internet 2 schools and 45mbit everywhere else (up and down of course)

I also hate 128kb upload.. Stupid Cox Communications.. Just think - one day we will look back and realize how utterly crappy 128k is when we have our 128gb upload pipe!

they cap cable users so that it doesnt bring down the entire network (area near you) down. Imagine if you had 200 people in the area, 200 computer, 200 cable modems, 200 256kbps uploads at the same time = 51200kbps = 6400KB/s = 6.4MB/s That would bog anything down going that fast.

...im capped @ 128 but only get 105 😱🙁...

<< optimum online is not capped...i wish they were my cable provider 😛 >>

Optimum Online IS capped at 1mbit upstream

<< Optimum Online IS capped at 1mbit upstream >>

But a 1mbps cap is very livable. You can transfer a 700MB CD in about 90 minutes at that speed. At 128kbps, you are looking at almost 12 hours.

I just got capped the other day too, I had 1 meg + upstreams for awhile, never abused it or anything but its very nice when I need to transfer files, now sub 128k, UGH.

When I first got cable it was capped at 256kbps, now it's 128kbps and it SUCKS. The worst thing is your download crawls while you're uploading something... 🙁

<< OMG! They're actually enforcing their caps? What is this world coming to?! >>

Exactly what I was thinking.

yeah, this is what ive read to that affect on dslreports. so their is a valid reason other than financial gain behind it. id rather have my 3.5Mbps download/128Kbps upload than crappy downloads/decent upload... since i dont run a server, or upload much.. download download download 😀

well, it's 128kbps max.
so in reality, you don't really get 16kB u/l unless you have no neighbors around you using @home service.
it's indeed annoying.
however, my recent concern is my dropping d/l speed.
i used to get 300kB average (i remember i saw it spiked upto 650kB once 🙂).
now, i can only get under 100kB in the morning and under 50kB at night.
this is just ridiculous.

Mine @home in Michigan has the dreaded cap...

Of course my great school hear lets me serve...hmmm...850KBps/s 🙂

yea, 128k is crappy. 512k-1mbit would be nice thought.

same here, If they see majority of others company capping to 128k, the rest will follow. Mine has also been capped to 128k just a week ago. First they were fooling around with my line adjusting my upload speed from 224k, 192k, 160k and finally made up their mind to permanently cap it at 128k.
They getting stingy, i use to be able to upload at 30k/sec, then 20k, 16k, and now 11k.

Cox@home has been good to us in AZ. It use to be an upload of 16KB/sec (128Kbps) then it was raised to 32KB/sec (256Kbps). Though I wish it was a tad higher, at least it is not at 16KB/sec.

128 is pretty bunk, even 256 or 384 would have been a lot better and probably not too stressful on the network.
