@home Chapter ll..what will you do?

Excite@home is trying to get the courts to let them shut down on Friday.

* If they do, what services will go down for cable modem users?
* Will we still have basic internet access, but without email, web hosting and the "oh-so-important" Excite portal.
* Will the cable companies like comcast be able to jump in and fill the gap like they claim?
* What type of equipment and services does the @home network run?

Heck!! I don't even own a modem any more!

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum....

You'll get more responses in Off Topic.

But, for the $40/month I pay Comcast, I'd better sure as he!! keep getting internet service!!! I don't care about e-mail since I use web-based services mostly. I do want my connection, though. Otherwise, I've got an awful lot of networking equipment that won't be doing very much. :|

I don't use their web space or their email but if the internet connection stops working I will flip my lid, and make a prompt call to the local dsl providers, will be a major hassle though.

I'm getting letters from AT&T (cable) that they have set up alternative services in the event the @home shuts down completely without alternatives (like AT&T buying them or being able to give them another huge shot of cash).

I've done cable-provided services before, it wasn't pretty.....as long as I get access, I don't really care. They're not my primary mail provider, I don't use their news, and I have some alternative DNS servers I can hit.

According to AT&T, they will call (voice) and tell me (or leave a message) that will direct me to a site that will set me up with their services, should @home croak.

FWIW

read about the shutdown 6:00AM
6:15 signed up for DSL
Might have both for 6 months but what can you do, had to beat the rush.

I've only had @home for about 8 months, and not too many people in my area are jumping on. Last Thursday, I got a call from BellSouth letting me know that DSL is avaialble in my neighborhood now. If the CO is where I think it is, I'm about 5,000 feet from it, so I should get a pretty good connection. Also, Knology (http://www.knology.com/) has just recently wired my neighborhood. They provide cable TV, phone service, and high speed internet service over one wire. I have a co-worker who has it, and he says he has better TV, phone, and internet service through Knology than he did with Comcast and BellSouth, plus his bill went down about $8 a month for the combined services. So, I can go with either 1.5M/640K down/up from BellSouth, or check on Knology. Either way, it shouldn't take long for me to get installed and going if my service is cut off. I'll wait and see what Comcast does.

i got email from comcast today. comcast@home in NJ anyway, may be out of service for couple days, couple weeks, couple months. they weren't sure on that. they suggested alternatives and that any days of service missed would be reimbursed.

my local cable company Shaw has already taken over @Home's services... they have set up their own data center for providing e-mail and webspace, and we have all switched over to their services...

So @Home going Chapter 11 doesnt affect me much...
