I just got @home cable service and am getting sort of low end download 2000Kbs or so. Are there any ways to go faster? I have the RCA DCM-235 modem conected with NIC card. I was also wondering if cable signal strength is an issue, the tech said mine was low but that if it connected to server then no problem. The only thing I've done is set rwin to 372300 which got me from 1500 to 2000. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

The speed depends a lot on the site. Your speed is pretty good (I'm assuming your quoting bits per second). Speed of about 250KBytes per second is decent. It may not be the max some are getting, but still decent. With my RCA modem I have seen 400KBbps a few times, but most sites give me only <200. You should try several sites to see since many sites out there are too slow to show you what your max is. Maybe try downloading a Linux-Mandrake image from a few of the .edu sites on the mandrake page.

Your speeds are far from low end (I used to get 150KBps max with my old Com21 modem).

Well not really complaining, but faster is always better. And yes I meant 2 meg/sec. I'm interested in any tweaks that are working and on the question of signal strength making a difference, the only thing I could think of is that it might generate droped packets, sort of like a noisy phone line?

No, no suggestions. Anyone getting over 100KBps is doing well enough that no one will ever look at it. In fact I've never heard of anyone topping 1100KBps so you're the fastest cable subscriber known to me or anyone who's worked for @Home in the last two years.

My AT&T cable connection's LOW end is about 1.6M, with a high of just under 3M (according to DSLReports speed test).

This is a reletively young system (a little over a year old), so the infrastructure is new, and there's a max of 128 addresses on the segment (.128 mask). It's also a fairly small subdivision, probably not a lot of users on the line.

And, of course, the uplink is capped at 128K...not an issue for me.

Try Dallas Speakeasy I've found them to be consistent no matter what time you test. That will give you an idea of your max and it really depends on where you download from. I've seen a sustained 4.5Mbps really late from a high speed FTP site. You can also go to dslreports and do a tweak test. But ya, anything over 1Mb is nothing to complain about.

I'd like to see some speed tests of this, 2MB/s would be 16 mega bits per second. The fastest I have ever gotten is off the @home news sever at 750KB/s=.75 mega bytes per second.

Wait is that supposed to be 2000 kilo bits or bytes?

the carrier frequency of cable modem access cannot support 2000 KBs.

do you mean Kbs?

big B = bytes, little b = bits?

i consistently get 2000-4000 Kbs.

That would be small b. I just tested on dslreports and got 1.2 to 1.3 on several tries, I was using pcpitstop test b/4 and was getting 2.1 to 2.5 "megabit". They recommended some tweaks in thier speed test with rwin and SackOpts. I'm going to try and see what I get. Some other folks in my area are getting as high as 1.8 mb/sec. according to dslreports. I am still wondering about cable signal strength and if that effects packet loss.

Enclose your room entirely in Reynolds Wrap. Then, place a metal pot onto of your head.
And finally and most importantly, the back of your computer must face East. And of course, it never hurts to have your computer turned on, too. Unless your in California.
If your in California, go to an Ethan Allen store and buy the card board computer that
sits on top of the computer desks that they are trying to sell.

Faster Internet????
Dropping your computer off a bridge while on-line, will give you a faster connection?
Of course, I suggest you let go of the keyboard. Also, you will need a really big monitor that is if you want to read what's on the screen as it falls.

When you checked on DSL Reports, did you compare your speed with other @home users in your zip code? If so, were they getting much higher speeds or similar? If similar, probably not much more you can do. If higher, then you might try additional tweaks. Also, you should get rid of the @home proxy settings if you installed their software. Checkout Speedguide.net for more info and other tweak suggestions.

Yes I did check against other in zip code, there are a couple at 1.8 megabit from my area and I was hitting 1.2 with same tests. I adjusted rwin to 62780 and mss to 1460 and enabled sackopts, that got me to 1.35 megabit fairly consistently. I get 2.5 megabits with pcpitstop after these tweaks.

Test running..........
** Speed 4688(down)/123(up) kbps **
(At least 93 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

I've done bttr b4, an extra mega bit maybe. But with all the ppl coming home from colelge its slowed down a little
