this is a question for people who use @home cable service. what cable modem are you using? they gave me the RCA modem. this modem seems to be working nice and all, but being that my computer is all black, the little white rca cable modem is an eyesore. does anyone know if i can use another modem, preferably in the black color, with @home service?

I'm using a Motorola CyberSurfer WaveModem. I think that's the model name. Its all dark grey so it should be fine for you.

EDIT: i'm getting too old. couldn't tell what color it was🙂

im using the motorola cybersurf black modem

lamest sh!t ever. they won't give me a terayon

It totally depends on your cable company and your area. Certain areas allow personal purchase modems, but serveral do not. You need to check with your cable provider to find out the specifics in your area.

Yes, if they gave you an RCA modem (probably the 225/226) then you can use any of their approved DOCSIS modems (they probably would not allow a nonapproved one). The 3COM sharkfins are a dark gray in color. The COM21 doxport modems are dark in color (blue/black). The Toshibas are black I think. Not sure of any other dark brands.

Another alternative is to hide the cable modem away.

Ummm... I don't know about in the States, but up here in Canada, you can't use any other cable modem other than the one thats assigned to you. I believe they keep some sort of database, and when you plug in your cable modem and try to establish a connection, its adding some sort of end to a packet that checks to make sure its the right one.

I've tried to use a friends cable modem at my house before. It was the same one, and we live in the same hub. Didn't work.

You can probably switch if you buy your own and ask them possibly... other than that, I'm not sure how else you can get around it.

Yeah, this white emits a lot of Electrons and confuses the Internet stream. Black RuleZ.

here's a really easy fix for you, I have the same one at home, they have an ethernet connection to your computer, that means you can put it wherever the h*ll you want, under your desk for example and just run an ethernet cable to it.
