Home Audio: Is it better to use multi channel input of digital input?

Anyways, is it better to use multichannel input from my Apex 800A to my Sony str 475 or use coaxial?

Also, how do i ge the damned thing to pay in DTS?! I set it up with digital coaxial and the only mode that turned on was pro logic. I was using a DTS movie, BTW.

I think it's better to use coaxial (digital) whenever possible. You're sure your receiver supports DTS and you setup the DVD player and movie to output DTS?

digital coaxial is fine, it will transmit DD, DTS, everything. As for why its coming up pro logic, I'm not sure. I know that some receivers say pro logic even when they're in DD or DTS. I suggest you get the AVIA test dvd and try one of their sound tests and see if all 5 channels are working. with Pro logic as you probably know the rear speakers both output the same sound. In DD and DTS, they are seperate.

Do you have the player setup to send the audio as stream or as PCM? Does the Dolby Digital out thru the digital coax work?

And, did you go into the movie's menu and switch to DTS? That's never on by default and you usually have to go into Special Features or Audio Setup from the menu.

It was set to PCM. Dolby Digital thru coax did not work. I did not switch the sound in the audio setup. Shouldnt the movie have at least come up as dolby digital? Or do they default to pro logic?

It's always best to use Digital.

Your reciever will be much cleaner for setting up those DD and DTS signals - don't let your DVD player do that.

Double check the player and movie settings. I think that's probably where the problem is.

Many movies don't default to 5.1 if it offers it (and, not all movies are in 5.1). They are all Dolby Digital but that doesn't mean 5.1. Dolby Digital could even be mono 1.0 (as the upcoming Duel, Spielberg's first flick, will be).

I always go into the menus to verify the audio settings.
