I saw an old friend of the neighborhood earlier today so I stopped to say hi. I had just bought a little laptop and Trav wanted to know what I was doing with it. I told him that if I can fix it, I'll probably sell it or just use it (I took it back for a refund, but that's another story). So he starts asking about computers and we have a nice conversation. He's really picking himself up after being down in the dumps, living on the streets, addicted to meth. He and I (and his two brothers) used to ring eachother's doorbells every saturday morning, depending on who got up first. The four of us were great friends. It's nice to see a guy working to better his life -especially one who I've grown up with. :) He, however, has connections to some .... not-nice people around my neighborhood. Big deal. Other people I know around here sell meth, vicodin, etc. Basic small-time crap.

Anyway, later this afternoon, this guy called The Monkey ( )walks up to the chain link fence in the front yard and starts yelling my name. I know him by face and we've acknowledged eachother in passing, but I usually keep my distance. My house is all of a 1.5 blocks away from the city's police station and the last thing I need is to be watched by the cops on suspision of association. I slide open the screen to the sliding glass door to my room and he asks if I fix computers. I said that I try and he goes off on how his PC doesn't work and what it's doing. He asked if I could help him out and I agreed and said he'd be back later.

Job hunting has been unsuccessful for too many weeks and I really need the money. However, I don't wanna be taking some idiot's drug money. Should I just fix the boot problem without charging him? I'm sick of looking for jobs today so I won't be doing much else, other than watching a few DVDs.

Advice?

No idea. I probably would do it and not charge him if it was something simple.

Exactly. Your concious should be clear. He is the one supposedly doing the illicit activities.

There's nothing to really be afraid of... You're just doing a job.

Just remember not to go snooping around the HD. Somethings might be better left unknown.

Still, him owing you a favor may be worth more, but charging him may well guarantee that he doesn't come back asking for free service.

i charge up all my drug dealing friends for sh|t they need fixed. he got the money so charge him more.

just today my friend had a moving company move him from one apartment to another. after moving his 65" tv and 50 pairs of sneakers, the movers say " so what do you do for work anyways???" lol

this kid has a bed, couch, tv and sneakers and he hires a moving company! nice to have money to burn.

unless ur ok with some probable problem..then reject politely/tactfully.

imagine if u found drug related stuff/kiddie porn on it..what do u do?
either way ur in trouble.

or if police nabs him...they know ur into his computer, they might drop by to nab
your computers too...

think u wanna mess with that?

There's nothing criminal about accepting his money--you're providing a legitimate service, and if you really really need the money, you'll be more sorry without it than you'd be ashamed with it. If you don't really need the money, though, I think you compromise the fewest principles by fulfilling your agreement with this guy and non-chalantly fixing his rig. Tell him not to fvck it up again because you don't like doing computer service. Tell him your real passion is acting. You know, as I'm sure most of us on these forums know, that as soon as you help someone with their computer then they'll tell other people who will also want your help. If you can do your best to make it seem like you don't like doing the work, then maybe he won't tell anyone else. Or you could just do a sh!tty 'repair' job, but again, that's breaking your principles (work ethic). If you really want money, you could make a tidy sum by fixing computers for the local drug network, but that's a pretty stupid risk.

I used to help people with computers, too, but I eventually told all of my 'customers' to blow me and learn from the internet like I did. It's just too much of a hassle.

I don't want any favors. Money will suffice. :) Besides... I like to snoop. One of the Cornelius cops is a good friend of the family. Maybe I can do more good than harm by snooping.

i doubt someone called "the monkey" is using excel to keep track of his coke and meth.

also, the police cant just drop by and touch his stuff without warrents which they couldnt get just for him fixing a pc.

its kinda scary... what are you getting yourself into? so lets say you fix it and its great, he pays you. a) what if you did such a great job, he'll recommend you to like other mob bosses? or some thugs of his? what if cops come and bust his thugs while youre there? b) what if while fixing the comp, cops come and bust YOU? like you said, association/affiliation. what if they bust you for like using his illegal software or something?

c) be afraid. be very afraid. he might like you so much he'll want you to be around him...

how can u guarantee, its only TheMonkey using that computer? Maybe his other 'associates and sub-contractors' use it too. Maybe its the 'company' laptop/computer.
