I was just working on my 10 page report for one of my classes. It's due next Wednesday. I take the floppy disk out of the drive and the metal piece at the top just falls off.

I decide that thats not good so I put the disk back in the comp. to transfer the files to another disk. The computer then won't read the files! Damn, so I then run error-checking in Win2000. Since when does the error-checking automatically delete files!

I am so fvcking pissed right now!

If anybody knows of any program that can retrieve old files or something PLEASE, I beg of you, to let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Hmm have you closed your document already? I assume that you have, you could poke around and see if Word saved part of your document temporarily on the local hard drive, I believe that Norton has some utility that might be able to restore files that you had on the disk. Have you tried reading the disk on another machine that doesnt have win2k installed on it? maybe it might be able to read the files on the disk. Good luck.

Seriously though, you may wanna try the disk on a computer that runs Win 95 maybe.

And one more thing, Word does save a copy sometimes called AUTORECOVER(Y). Search for that.

should be a temporary word file saved on ur Hard drive with the file.
Also why didnt u save a copy to the hard drive in the first place?

good luck :-\ it really sucks when that happens... well i havent had the disk problem... but the crsh without saving thing.. that's not good either.

there's a program called recover4all...it recovers deleted files that haven't been written over. works on HDs, i'm not sure about floppies though.

You may be able to use disks without the metal sleeve, but one of my coworkers has run into this and says occassionally floppy drives will recognized that it has not pushed open the sleeve and will recognized there is something physically wrong with the disk, and won't read it. He said he was able to pull the sleeve off another disk and make it work temporarily, long enough to copy the files off.

Back in the day, I transplanted the innards of a melted 5 1/4 to a good sleeve, successfully copied the files off of it and onto a 'good' disk, and was able to run the files no problem.

powerquest makes a program, the name escapes me now, that can recover most stuff...i once used it on an accidently formatted hd, and was able to get most of the stuff back

Thanks everyone for the help. I am going to try those those recovery programs.

I know you should be able to use a floppy without the sleeve, but then crap like this happens.

Don't know if anybody has told you yet, but Scandisk DOES delete files. I had the same thing as you, working on a paper, and Word 2000 crashed. Did a reboot, and Scandisk deleted the file i was working on. I was screwed as well.

What you need is SpinRite from http://grc.com/sroverview.htm

Scand disk delets files, but only automaticaly if you set it too... mine is set to prompt.
u can also set it to backup or something like that....

look for a file called total Recall , and also , dude! , do a scan disk and look for the CHK files on your system .

Someone help this poor guy!

umm... assuming you havent done this already but, open word BY ITSELF, ie. dont go new office document or open an existing document but go Start -> programs -> MS office -> word.

the file should appear minus the last 5 minutes of work.

Remember, email yourself a copy when using a lab computer. A second source never hurts (unless it's a Iomega product).
