Holy sh!t!! Gran Turismo 4 to have 1080i support???

IGN article.

If you read a couple of paragraphs down, you'll find this little beauty:
The game offers Dolby Pro Logic II sound support, allowing those with compatible sound equipment to experience races in surround. Video output is compatible with 480p and, surprisingly, 1080i output. Both offer clear improvements over the standard interlaced output that you get on a normal television, and although the 1080i output isn't as stunning as the 720p output we've seen in other non-PS2 titles, you'll still want to make sure you have the proper television equipment to get the ultimate GT experience.
Sure, they say it doesn't look as good at some 720p games, but it still should look ultimately better than 480p. Even the fact that it supports 480p surprises me on the PS2 hardware. I'm really thinking this is some kind of misunderstanding, but I hope not.

If I can play GT4 in 1080i glory, cheers to all!!!

My guess, and I want to stress that I'm only guessing, is that GT4 running at 1080i is not going to render much more graphics in-game, just rely on the line doubling technique Sony's been using for a while on the PS2 (SOCOM for example). When it comes to screenshot time, when the system has much longer to render, it will probably fully utilize the 1080i resolution.

It's a fair tradeoff - I'm not criticising. You really can't take in 1920x1080 pixels of graphical glory while negiotating an S-turn at 100MPH.

A lot of console games support resolutions higher than 640x480. The pos consoles can't push them in those resolutions, but that's beside the point, right?

All you're gonna see is more jaggies, 1080i is nice I suppose, but it just makes you see the limitations of the PS2 even more, especially on a large tv.

With low detail settings (default for consoles), a GF3 could run most games, including newer ones, in more than 640x480. It can run 4 year old games in 12x10 or even 16x10. Unlike consoles though, gf3 prices have gone down.

PS2 graphics are getting dated, but I'd hardly call it a POS. There are still games being released on it that have impressive graphics.

So you're saying that Gran Turismo has bad graphics? Kingdom Hearts has pretty nice graphics too. And dated graphics alone don't make a system a POS. Do you consider NES's and Dreamcasts POS systems too?

Had better graphics than most games on the other consoles. GT proves how good the PS2 is.

In an attempt to bring this thread back on topic (in other words, stop posting useless junk because we're trying to get a meaningful discussion going) how do you get your PS2 to display 1080i? Do you actually need to set the mode somewhere? Do you need component cables instead of my current S-Video cable? Or do you need a TV that specifically does 1080i? I'm playing through my All In Wonder, I wonder if I can benefit from the high res.

You do need component cables over your S-Video cable (only components and DVI do HD quality picture, 720p, 1080i, 1080p). As for the need of a TV that does 1080i, I'd think you'd be hard pressed to find an HDTV that doesn't do 1080i. If you can only do 720p, I'm not quite sure if the PS2 would automatically downconvert the signal for you. I know the XBOX doesn't upconvert 720p to 1080i.

As for getting the PS2 to display 1080i, I know the very few games that do 480p require you to hold some sort of button combination during game bootup. Not sure if this is the same for 1080i, but I guess we'll see in the coming hours once more people get their hands on the game. I'll have it tomorrow, so I'll report back on whether 1080i is even worth the effort over 480p.
