Holy racist auction Batman!!

OMG -- my husband and I saw a bunch of these the other day and were freaked out, too -- there was a "Big Black Mammy" teapot :Q 😱

I think these all came from Japan (IIRC) -- and they may have some historical value -- but people could be a lot more sensitive in describing and providing context for them

That reminds me of what a black coworker told my dad when my dad asked him if he wanted to get in on some Gallagher tickets.

"Sorry, I can't bear to watch him waste all those watermelons."

I don't see anything racist about that auction...

the title makes it seem like they're either making a joke of it or glorifing the stereotype. the latter could be seen as racist.

Ahh, shows how PC the world is when an auction like this puts everyone's panties in a bunch...sheesh, how is that rascist?

Wanna hear/see something more "un-PC" than that? listen to some rap....oh wait, that would be infringing on free speech if we criticized that wouldnt it

It's a black boy eating a watermellon. What's so offensive about that? The regional dialect used in the title? Not everyone speaks English like a middle class white person from the midwest. It's just a fact, there's no sense letting it get to you. Might as well smile about it.

It's not a black boy eating a watermelon. It's a boy in black-face eating a watermelon. Read up on Southern history. Black-face is a popular Southern theater style that was used to make fun of blacks.

Of course, there's nothing inherently racist about selling this item online. It's a piece of American history. What makes it obviously a tasteless racist joke is the title "Dis Watamelon sho am be good", which again, is something right out black-face theater. If you were seriously trying to sell thing on Ebay you would probably use as the title something which decribed the item you were trying to sell.

technically, its not racist as Shantau said. I've seen racist stuff though.

I was looking up to see if there is any ancient Aryan artifacts, and i got a whole slew of racist stuff :|

Am I the only one here who remembers that restaurant chain that had the Lil' Black Sambo kid for one of their "mascots?" What was that chain? I don't even remember.

I really don't give a rat's ass about PCness but I still think the Sambo deal was a little messed up. They had a whole background story about him and his friend all made up and he was on the placemats and menus!

Oh well...at least we still have Aunt Jemima. 😉

I know about black face, and minstrel shows and all that, but since the sculpture isn't acting on stage, and no biography was given for the model, maybe it is just a black boy eating a watermellon? Or maybe it's a zombie from the planet Zorton dressed up as a black boy eating a baby with a watermellon hologrammed around it.

The title is just a sample of the dialect that might have been used by the boy in the sculpture during the time he appears to be from. That's all it is, but you can read as much or as little into the intents of the author from that as you like.
