Without the key?
While washing my Land Cruiser yesterday, I noticed for the first time that the wheels have locking lugnuts on them. I bought this car used this spring. I looked everywhere, but the key doesn't seem to be in the vehicle (but the 4 lugnuts they replaced are :roll;). What are my options for getting them off?

You can have a regular lugnut welded to the keyed ones, then take it off with a regular lugwrench. Just make sure the welder can do it without damaging your wheels.

The dealer said they did an n point inspection. I assume at least one of those points was the breaks, so they must have had the key there. But that was months ago on the other side of the country. If they forgot to put it back in the car, I doubt they could locate it now. But I'm gonna call. I can get the original owner off the original title also, so will try that as well.

just go buy a socket ?*barely* smaller than the locking lugnut, then hammer the hoe ontop of it. Then. use a breaker bar and take the thing off.


Probably cost you $8 in sockets at most.


(that's what I did on my car when the douche dealer who sold me the car told me that the key was with the jack.. and it wasn't)

Really depends on if they're aftermarkets or from a dealer. Dealerships can often sell the kits for those....just drive it in and see if the parts dept can help you.

Yea, that's the first place I looked ... in the toolkit with the lugwrench, etc. That's where I found the 4 spare lugnuts. Checked around in that storage area also, in case it fell out of the kit. Nada.

Call the dealer first. If they don't have the OEM key they can still get them off.

Had similar problem with my '91 Mustange GT. had a flat, took out the lug wrench which had the key attached; key fell off, rolled and dropped down a rain gutter... ** Called the dealer, an hour later one of their shop techs arrived with a socket that had a bunch of pins in it. He just put that pinned socket on the lug wrench and the keyed lug came off w/out damaging it.

Go to the dealership where you bought it (or if u didn't buy it from a dealership, find the one that sells your brand) They should have the master set of locking lugnut keys. I know from experience!!

Auto parts/auto supply stores sell locking lugnut kits with keys for about 15 bucks. You can have a mechanic rip off the old ones and replace them.

Just take it to the Toyota dealership, they should have a master set. I had to get my Mazda towed to Bob Penkhus when I got a flat because I had a keyed lug nut, they took it off and I ran with 4 nuts on my wheels for a few days until I could take it to Discount Tire and get a set I had the key to (or you can just put regular nuts on).

Thanks guys ... I'll run by the dealer tomorrow and see if they can help. Was thinking that a tire shop might be able to help also. They probably get lots of cases where a customer drops off the car but forgets to leave the lugnut key.

On another note, this thing has 6 lugs! Never seen more then 5 on a regular passenger car, as far as I recall. Lots of stuff in it that shows the land cruiser legacy as a back-country vehicle. Another one that comes to mind are the dual fan belts.

Well, after spending $30 and the better part of Saturday afternoon trying to get em off myself, I took it in to Firestone on Sunday. An hour and a half & $32 later they were off! I had em do a brake inspection also which confirmed what I already knew (needed new pads on the front). So I did that Sunday afternoon.

Cliffs Notes: Take it to a shop and save yourself the hassle.

Yea, I started looking at wheels more closely after I posted that and found that it isn't as uncommon as I had thought.
