HOLY $h1t3!!! New Audigy drivers + WinAmp + XP = 0% CPU Usage

I'm dead serious!

I just installed the Audigy driver update from Creative for WinXP...

Playing MP3's right now, and the ONLY CPU usage I get is when the drive accesses to fill the play buffer every few second. Is this not insane?

Moving the mouse uses more freaking CPU time.

I am seriously impressed now.

Oh yeah, and before anybody makes a smartass comment, yes, WinAmp is actually running and playing a song.

Pretty good...my winamp is currently eating 2% CPU...this is with a Vortex2 card..but I'm also using the MAD plugin which eats a little extra CPU.
I don't know much about the audigy, but can it output 24bit?

hey me too! 0%percent cpu usage while winamp is playing, along with ICQ, Opera, Eudora, and mIRC open.
Cool!

oh wait. I have a MX300 soundcard....

big whoop

When I had a P200MMX, AWE32 and Win98, playing Winamp required about 25% CPU. Now with a CelII@840, Santa Cruz and Win2K, playing Winamp requires 0% CPU. I'm not so sure there is any Audigy/XP magic here....0% (or maybe 1%) is fairly common I'd think.

exactly..
with today's gigahertz processors.. a CPU usage percentage doesn't mean a whole lot.

if you're touting the Audigy with it's 0% you should compare it to something. It's not impressive at all when every soundcard and it's mother can achieve the same damn thing

if you're touting the new drivers, what was cpu usage before?

compare it to something before you get all excited...

Anyone want to point me to some audigy reviews?
Does it have coax out? or just toslink?

I found out it does 24bit output and now I'm very interested since MAD plugin output @ 24bit sounds amazing. Plus this vortex2 runs pretty damn handicapped in WinXP. I can't even access the Graphic Equalizer anymore 🙁 *snif*

I can't check at work but I seem to recall winamp using virtually nothing on my home comp with no special soundcard 🙂 Although winamp seems to be getting needlessly bigger with each release CPU speed is so much higher than in the past that mp3 decompression uses an insigificant amount of overhead in any reasonably fast system.

Even with my crossfading plugin my winamp is about 0-1% cpu usage.

SB Live!
1.6ghz AMD Athlon (yes, it's 1.6 t-bird, not a 1600+).

With the pre-official XP drivers, I was getting around 12% cpu.

I personally have never seen a soundcard under 8% CPU on any platform, so this is impressive to me.

Im runnin XP with Acoustic Edge on a 1.2ghz Athlon w/512 DDR Ram

Winamp usually uses about 1% processor usage, 2% if i move my mouse 🙂

My eMachines 500ID crappy system has 192 megs of ram, CrystalFusion Sound Card, and windows XP - CPU Usage while playing MP3's - 0%. I waited for like 10 mins looking at the taskbar, and it didn't even use the CPU to change songs...
The same for my P4 Rig... and the only exception is my lappie.

Heh, I could play mp3's with K6-200 and crappy SB16 Vibra sndcard with about ~8% CPU usage more than three years ago. Now with Duron 700 and SBLive, amout of CPU time going for mp3 decoding is too small (below 0.1%) to show up in graph, too.

Speaking of that.... Fisher Price + Microsoft = WinXP too 😉

EDIT: BTW I just did the same test in 2K with an MP3, I have the Live! with the built in 2K drivers and same thing 0%

WOW!!! I have a 486 at a dos prompt running nothing and I get 0% CPU usage!!!

I'm dead serious!

...big deal
