It happens with the brain malfunctions. I remember reading something about this on AT before where the brain writes to long term memory as well as short term memory. The brain manages to either write them simultaneously or to long term just before short term so your short term ends up linking back to long term giving the illusion that you've done that exact same thing before. Or something.

The equations only balance out if you factor in time as a mathematical component mapped to more than one dimension. Imagine a cartesian plane with the x-axis corresponding to past-->future, and the y-axis corresponding to, well, something else. Thus you have a dim perception of events that occur at different coordinates in the plane.

Yup. The weird thing with me is, sometimes I'll think of something happening, and then a few days later, It'll happen, excatly, all the details.

thats one explanation i heard

thats not really called for... neurologists have done research and it is one of the possible explanations, google if you wish. its no more ridiculous than any of the other theories. notice that deja vu only really affects vision, there are no similar feelings for taste or touch or hearing...

Not true. I've had deja vu with smells before. Especially after a hard night's drinking.... :DJust kidding about that, but I have had deja vu spawned by certain odors.

My theory is that when we're awake we remember nothing and when we're sleeping we're actually remembering what is happening in the day, therefore right now we're sleeping. A deja vu occurs when the brain has a jump and remembers something too quickly.

I get deja vu a lot, and it's often very vivid. Sometimes I can remember having the dream I'm reliving when it happens.

Not exactly deja-vu, but sometimes when I'm sleeping and something is about to wake me up, I know exactly who/what is going to wake me up before I get up.
Example, I'll be dreaming about my somebody waking me up and the next second I get a pat on my back or I hear someone calling for me to get up right when I open my eyes... maybe a split second between me opening my eyes and getting the reaction.
It freaks me out every single time...

When it happens to me I think back on it, and it feels like its something that happened years ago. I never get deja vu that feels like it was recent.
