The weather service boys who do our storm spotter certification classes every year say 1 sec/mile

I hate to admit to my source, LOL, but I think it was on Survivor that they had a survival quiz, and stated that that was a myth about the one second per mile.

Hey, when you see lightening and less then a second later, you hear thunder, does that mean the lightening is close?

well, not only is it close, but it causes you to ask "duh" questions.;)

I've seen lightning actually touch ground less than 1/10th mile away

How about the fence post about 10 feet away as you are going to turn off the water because you afraid you might get hit by approaching lightning?

I also saw lightning hit a power line in front of me while driving, and a blue ball of electricity rolled down the line til it hit the transformer and exploded.

Heh, my great aunt was killed by lightning. She went to shut the windows since water was getting in the house during a thunderstorm and then - bam - lightening hit the house. She was standing in the puddle of water next to the window when she died.

oh about 7 years ago I was at a restraunt, and of course there was major storm going on outside.

they had these HUGE windows that when we got a thunderstrike two windows broke. we drove around the back of the restruant and there was a HUGE hole in the road about 3 feet across. we found a destoryed beer can on the ground.

guess what it targeted? another 10 feet and the building probably would have been struck
