HOLY CRAP! Star Trek like phazer invented! They call it a "Plasma Tazer"

Wow, that's really cool. Still not close to a phaser though. I believe phasers are still based on emitting contained energy, like a laser - whereas the tazer mentioned in the article is using a conductive gas to allow an eletrical current to travel through.

When they perfect that, that would be a nice replacement to normal hand guns...

:shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked:

I remember walking down a street with a friend in 1985 when I was 10 years old. We were talking about what it might be like in the year 2000, and whether or not they might have star-wars-like lasers by then. (Hey, I was 10!)

Turns out I was only 5 years off! :thumbsup:

Ionized gas = plasma??? Did I miss something in chemsitry?

er, i guess you did, an easy way to explain this is that plasma is super heated gas.
learned that in chemistry.

I really think this is the prelude to the phazer as in Star Trek. Its kinda scary though - this in the hands of police could mean totalitarianism, super duper control factor,etc.

I'm sure people said the same thing about the advent of the hand carried firearm too. I'd much rather the police carried something like this than a firearm where appropriate.

I don't know man. I think police will be more willing to use a non leathal weapon like this more often than a leathal one. You know, in situations where a weapon might not be warrented.

I think of HL2, and just walking up to the police gets you a jolting bonk.

Awesome invention though. Lightsaber? gimme a good blaster anyday.

Right. If its non-lethal like this they'll be using it all the time instead of only when they have to, like with a standard firearm.
