Holy crap! My Amd 3000+ 64 is running at 27 degrees C! ON AIR!

Im having some problems with the memory and I was tinkeringwith the bios when I stumbled upon the temperature. Im using a zalman aclu7000 and the thing is running 27c idle. Case is coolermaster 201b with the 3 fans that come with it. Is this bad or unusual? Possible notebook processor? Maybe this is where the 3000+'s came from and not defective 3200+s/newcastles

I think I said that my 3000+ on air OC'ed to 2200 runs at 33 idle, and 42 full load, so 27c at idle stock sure sounds normal to me. Why do you think I have been recommending it so highly ? And I just got PC 3500 Hyperx C2 to make sure I DIDN'T have memory problems. What motherboard did you get ? And what memory, and at what settings are you having trouble ?

And what PSU ? (probably not a factor ?) Anyway, try letting the motherboard use SPD to determine the settings. If it still gices you problems, try CAS3 -4-4-11 just to make sure it IS the memory. If it runs at that, then there should be no change for motherboard or CPU to be the problem. With that internal memory controller, I suspect it is even more picky about memory. When all else fails, try Hyperx PC3500 C2. 512 meg for $116. (thats what I and NFS4 are running)

my friends a64 3200 was running at friggin 70c idle. hes got the shuttle case, its not even overclocked. either his temp reader is wrong, or his is got something wrong with it.

You sure its 70C and not 70F? I didnt think they would run that hot.

What are your case temps? Mine is usually over 40 since I shove my PC in the drawer in my desk and I don't like making my PC noisy with lots of fans. Not to mention it's Florida here 🙂

If I remember correctly, the A64's all have a form of speed-step in them, so if it's that cool, it's likely that your CPU isn't running at full speed in the first place.

people ought to state their case temps when being so amazed at their CPU temps..
In the winter when I do crazy cooling for my case, and get my case temp down to 16C, I was able to get my AthlonXP Palomino 1600+ @ 1.8GHz and 1.85V to run at 27C on air cooling. Now usually in the summer when my case temp is 40C.. my CPU will run at 50-60C. Same CPU, same cooling, just different room temperature...

Its not that unrealistic. Dont Athlon64's have dynamic clock adjusting? At idle, NSF4 said his ran at 800Mhz.

I think that you have to be in Windows to have it running at 800mhz

Ya, it all comes down to ambient temp. My 2.6C@3.5 idles at 28 but the case temp is 24 and theres lots of fans blowin.. in summer my idle temp goes up to about 32.

I doubt that it is a notebook processor. However, there is a mobile version of the Athlon64 on the horizon.

That temparature is very good. It's unusually low. What is the case temparature that you are getting?

I never take a mobo temp reading for granted. Is this the actual diode temp and not just the socket temp?

My current 2500 barton socket temp is around 37c overclocked, but the diode sensor my mobo came with shows the actual temp at 49-52c. And this is with a Alpha Pal 80mmfan @ 37 CFM's in a coolermaster case, I might add.

But I'm happy to hear from all the current A64 users (all 4 of you), that your CPU stays cool. Leaves hope for that I can overclock my 3000 to 2.2 Ghz's when my mobo arrives.

Athlon-64's dissipate MUCH less heat than Athlon XP's and P4... IIRC, the Opteron x46's (2.0 Ghz) have a maximum thermal design power of 85-90 watts... but the typical is 40-45... I'll have to look it up again to be sure...

OK, I have a Athlon64 3000+ clocked at 2170 (at the moment), and abient temp is 70F(21C) case temp is 29C, CPU is 31C. (idle)
