As I was getting bored with all my PC Games, I decided to pick up KOTOR II last week. I remember hearing so many good things about KOTOR I&II but RPGs are really not my type of game (more of an FPS type of guy) so I never bothered picking it up.

I finally got my hands on it via a game trading site, and started playing it. In the beginning it was really slow and boring but after I got my lightsabers and force powers, the game became amazingly fun. I love the fact hat you could customize the lightsabers and use two light sabers at once. Even playing with blaster rifles are fun. And the story is just so kick@$$ and the voice acting is just amazing (I love the BAO-DUR guy, he has the most monoone but interesting voice I've ever heard).

In all, I probably wasted around 12 hours playing it over the weekend and I probably still have a long way to go.

Highly recommended to anybody.

I have never played KOTOR II, but I have played KOTOR I and it is an excellent RPG. Not as good as Baldurs Gate 2 or PlaneScape: Torment (arguably the best RPG ever made, it was created by many people who are now employed by Obsidian Entertainment (the makers of KotOR 2) back before Interplay downsized its development house Black Isle Studios), but still excellent.

Unfortunately, Kotor 2 was rushed and Lucas Arts forced it to ship way too early. Content was cut and bugs went unfixed. The results of Lucas Art's modern focus on impatient rapid development and shortsightedness can now felt by its employees as it downsizes.

If it is not vaporware, the PC gaming community has set out to restore some of the content that Obsidian was forced to remove to meet Lucas Arts' deadline.

Knights of the Old Republic 2, we feel, is a fantastic game. It's also undoubtedly a wounded game: a lonely game that knows it's incomplete as it is but just can't bear to admit it to itself. It's okay, KOTOR2. We're here for you. Shhhh. We're here.

If you're here, you probably know that KOTOR2 had a lot of cut content, including some very important scenes near the end. If you didn't know: KOTOR2 had a lot of cut content, including some very important scenes near the end. You can read a lot of it and listen to some sound clips here.

We're adding back in as much of the cut content as is possible. We are dedicated to forming a coherent story out of these sound clips and occasionally-ambiguous action descriptions, so unfortunately, we cannot include every single cool thing that was cut. But, we will still have plenty of coolness.

If you have not played KotOR 1, I strongly suggest buying it and playing it if you are a fan of pcRPGs.

Its content was cut, just like the PC versions and it was rushed out as well. It would probably be best to go for the PC version since you can get community made mods and patches for it.

I enjoyed KOTOR II, but the first one is a lot better in all respects. I haven't gotten Mass Effect yet, but I plan to as soon as the new video cards come out at the end of this month. From everything I've heard, it continues the scifi RPG legacy of the KOTOR series and the quality of other BioWare games.

Is anything significant missing if I play KOTOR 1 instead of 2?

Yes. The plot and character development of the first is much better. I would go as far as to say the second game is pale in comparison to the first.

At least, I enjoyed the first much more than the second.

Both games are very much worth playing.

KOTOR I has a better and more complete story. KOTOR II has a very good story but the ending is weak, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the first 90% of the game.

KOTOR II has a much better crafting system since blasters have 5+ each of scopes, chambers, cells and you craft better ones as you or your NPCs skills improve. Lightsabers now have parts in addition to crystals: lenses, emitters and cells. Items you don't want can be broken down into components (with the amount based on repair skill) to use to craft new upgrades.

KOTOR II also has an influence system: most NPCs' light/dark alignment is tied to your influence + your own light/dark level so if you're light-side you can redeem a dark character and if you're dark-side you can bring an NPC down to dark side mastery with you.

KOTOR II also has more and better powers and feats, including featss you miss in KOTOR 1 like weapon finesse for high-Dex Jedi. Your character starts as a Jedi so you have 23-25 Jedi levels instead of 10-15 to give you more to play with.

I just finished replaying KOTOR II this weekend, taking the dark path this time, and before the end 3 of my companions were dark Jedi with dark side mastery

mAdMaLuDaWg -- if you aren't reading any walkthroughs, a semi-spoiler is that you want to get your own character's Repair up to at least 20 for crafting. Breaking down components uses -your- skill not other party members. You also want to have other characters max out other/different class skills for crafting since the best parts can require a skill over 30.

I'm waiting for that KOTOR II restoration project to finish before I start playing. The stupid game crashes every 30 minutes on me.

I liked both KotOR games a lot but like others here, the first one was better imo.

The first KotOR was about the only game I've ever played twice. Once lightside and once darkside.

In my recent the dark side game I had only one crash to desktop, after playing for more than 3 hours straight. This is under XP, 2GB, 7900GT with 1+-year-old nvidia drivers.

What I did get in both KOTOR I & II is the "character frozen after combat" bug where combat ends and movement keys are ignore for the main character but others in the party move normally. The fix for this is just to save then load.

I have KOTOR 1 and 2 in queue (along with Witcher, Oblivion). I have no idea when I'll get a break to play games but here's hoping too sometime soon!!

Yes. The plot and character development of the first is much better. I would go as far as to say the second game is pale in comparison to the first.

At least, I enjoyed the first much more than the second.

You got his question backward.

Yep. IMO the second game would have wiped the floor with the first if there was a decent ending. I loved the character development/dialogue in the 2nd one, and I thought the story was better too - more mysterious than the original's PLOT TWIST!!!1!!!

KotOR II is horrible compared to KotOR, so the fact that it's still a pretty good game should tell you something.

That said, Mass Effect is proving to be the perfect evolution of that same formula, and frankly it's winning me over big time. I'm only partway through, but ME is very *very* strong. PCRPG of the year '08?

It would have, but it didn't. The 2nd one had way too much cut and suffered for it.

One of my favorite aspects of KOTOR2 was the ability to affect your party members alignment, for good or ill. I wish more RPGs would implement similar designs. I should be able to corrupt or redeem the people I travel with.

KOTOR II was nice, a bit too easy i think with the epic levels and all.
but still, KOTOR was better. definately play first KOTOR if you liked the second.

I enjoyed them both too however I can see why some people hate KOTOR2,it was buggy/incomplete and rushed out too early, shame really since it could of been up there with KOTOR.

I have always wondered why they never bothered to release any expansion packs for KOTOR games, you can bet they would sell pretty well.
