Just upgraded to a 9700pro. Frames rates are now totally smooth (at least smooth enough for me) but I think the Ti4200 looked better..am I crazy? I have a good feeling that the lights and things were smooth in the graduations on the Ti4200 but on the 9700, it looked like it was running in 16bit color or less. Also there's some noticeable tearing that wasn't there before. I'm no serious gamer and just popped in the card and installed the latest catalyst drivers but are there things I can tweak out to optimize this setup?

For what its worth, do you have alot of applications running in the background that could be shutdown while playing?

That 9700 should do you justice....did you try messing around with the in game settings a bit?

Yea the in game settings didn't do much. I think I have to mess with the driver settings itself. What's the current popular Radeon tweak app?

If you just uninstalled your nvidia card and then installed the ati card, you might be getting issues with the old nvidia drivers. might be time for a reinstall of windows and make sure u get the latest drivers from ati.

these are still beta but will fix most issues with doom3

i just upgraded my 5200 to the 9800 pro for this game and for some reason the color on my monitor keeps messing up. sometimes it gets too bright and sometimes it looks like i got fewer colors available than i should have. like its 8 bit and darker than usual.

Thank you for the info. I'll keep that in mind.

I get between 2 and 22fps depending on the size and complexity of the room and what funky stuff the current guns/enemies are doing. That's on a Mobility 9000 and P4 3Ghz... But hey, 60fps when watching the id cinematic or when I'm dead*, face down on the floor. Sweeeet!

*currently happening a lot in multiplayer thanks to my mate and his friggin Geforce, not a fair fight if he can see methinks

I upgraded a similar system [P4 2.6 GHz, 1 GB RDRAM (400 MHz bus)] from a Ti4600 to a 6800 Ultra, and I can tell you it makes a huge difference. Haven't done any actual benchmarks yet (just installed this stuff yesterday and still testing the system, etc.), but suffice it to say it makes a HUGE difference. Without antialiasing, I can get a higher framerate at 1600 x 1200 in Ultra than I could on my Ti4600 at 800 x 600 on medium. (That's not to say I'll play at that res. I still have to go through and decide what setting I want to use for the best balance of performance and quality). Suffice it to say I think a graphics update would do you wonders.

You will be CPU limited, but in my experience, that limits the general framerate only. IE, you may only be able to hit 50 frames per second or something, even at the lowest res, but increasing res and detail won't drop that much.

Good luck!

And what did that have to do with him having a 4200?

i have a similar system and i was showing him what a 6800GT could do if he dropped one in his

Settings, that's where it makes the difference.

Some people really hate turning them down (like me). Some don't mind it. So it runs fine for them, and not so well for people who won't go back to 800x600. That's why I bought my 6800GT.

On my new 9700pro on some parts of the game it gets rather choppy at 1024x768 and high settings with AA on. I could live with 20fps as long as it's consistant but I guess that's not possible.

You should be able to run it at 800x600 medium/low quality. Here's a tip though: you just wasted $50. LOL. D3 is not even close to the 4th of July that people make it out to be. Turn corner, shoot zombie. Repeat that xxxx number of times and you've just finished the game.

Doom3 scares the piss out of me!
Running a 9500Pro "unlocked via Bios" and it looks great.
I play only at night, dark and with headphones :)

Mr. Koba, you need to get the Catalyst 4.9 beta drivers from ATi. They should give you a 5-10% boost. After installing them, set the two texture sliders to "quality", set AA/AF to "application preference", force vsync and enable triple buffering in the compatiblity options.

I had a similar spec like yours, i can play doom 3 fine on 800x600 med/low. If you really want to play that game so bad, don't want to spend a fortune, and don't really care about the eyecandies, turn it down to 640x480 low, you will definately get around ~35ish fps. I HAD a system like that, but i recently just upgraded to a 6800, not the GT or ultra, and i am able to play 1280x1024 at high/ultra high at ~60ish fps. That is the highest my monitor can handle :D my friend had a 5900xt and he is able to push it to 1024x768 high with an average of 60fps. Try overclocking a little using coolbits

You need atitool, powerstrip, or rage3d tweak. Be careful overclocking as Doom 3 is very sensitive to it. You will not gain very much anyway, unless your card is a golden sample.

you must admit this game is quite bad when compared to any decent FPS from the last year or so. It's basically a classic sequel rip-off story. The amazing thing is that the developers must have realized how bad this game is, but they still try to charge $55 for it. I got bored after 5 minutes, n\and I'm sure many other people feel the same.

Not saying you're wrong or anything. I just rarely ever play games to begin with. MOHAA is just about the only FPS game I've played in the last few years. I needed to satisfy my hunger for cool graphics and have a little bit of fun for once and for that, D3 fits the bill nicely. I do want to get a throttle and flightstick for FS2004 though.
