This game makes my 'then' killer system feel pretty ancient. Feel pretty stupid for spending $60 on a game I can't even play smoothly. Now I gotta upgrade for games I don't often play.....anyway...I wonder where the major bottleneck is? I'm thinking it's the vidcard. At least it's not crashing or anything like that. It does take rather long to load in some parts.

System specs:

A-Bit NF7-S 2.0
XP 2800+ @2Ghz (200x10)
2x512DDR (400MHz)
Asus Ti4200 128MB <---probably the bottleneck...yea?
3x120GB IDE Seagates
Delta 1010

Spending thousand of bucks on upgrades on a average game like Doom3 would be stupid. Unless you are upgrading from an ancient system like K6 or P3. I've seen lots of people putting down big bucks on x800/6800 & A64 just so they can run Doom3 godly, even tho their current system was more than decent.

I would do that but not on a game like Doom3, granted it has excellent graphics, but graphics != gameplay.

i would still update the graphics jsut because its so old, even as a casual gaming experience. plus you gotta remember there are other games coming out that are worth playing.

Yea I know. Exactly that but I had to check out what all the hype was about anyway. MOHAA was great fun for me and is probably the only FPS game I was able to get into. So far D3 has a cool creepy mood but I just can't enjoy it without some smoother performance. I'm still an Arkanoid fan.

Jeeesh, I've upgraded my system but now can't get excited enough to go out and buy the game.
But at least now my Internet surfing feels more snappy!

All you need is a new video card. I have nearly the same system as you, but with a 2.2GHz XP, and Doom 3 runs fine at 1600x1200, medium textures, on a 9800 Pro. With a 6800 GT, you'll be smoother than silk.

Agreed with everyone here. If I remember correctly, even like a XP2500+ can run D3 with decent frames if you have a good video card. I'm also in need of a new video card too. =\

Well I just overclocked my ti4200 and performance ain't too bad. I've got it doing 295/516 without artifacts.
800x600 medium quality in D3. What a creepy ass game.

Decent system, but yeah, you're right, the vidcard is the bottleneck... what resolution and quality setting are you playing at?

eh, one of the hardware sites did a doom3 benchie with old systems and stuff. your cpu is adequate. heck they were testing from 1800-3200 xp's... the 2500+ and up were all fine. its vid card that matters. ur card is ancient.. for doom3 atleast.

my coworker has same setup as yours. his gaming is smoother by enabling triple buffering in opengl settings and doing the cachemeg tweak in doomconfig.

64MB mobile 9700's can play D3 with a decent cpu and 512MB of RAM, so the requirments aren't terribly terribly high for being able to play.

Try turning off specular. That option alone turned my laptop (64MB Mobility 9600) from unplayable to decently smooth (~30-35 FPS) at 1024x768 medium quality.

Mega, that's in my girlfriends computer now and she doesn't like me messing around inside her PC during her busy times.

I don't see a triple filtering option in OGL settings.....

Schaden, of course I'd have a 6800GT if I made money off playing games pfft!

Yep. I have a 2500+ (OC'ed to 3200+ speeds) with a GB of RAM and a 9800 Pro. I run the game just fine.

I have a 2400+ at default clocks, Ti4600 and 768MB SDRAM. I'm running D3 at 1024x768 and medium quality and it seems to be running at decent framerates. I'm not experiencing any lag. :D

Just get 9800 pro, under $200 shipped.

maybe 6800 is a better bet in this case as he cares about Doom 3. It can be found for $290.
