Yes true lossless audio at 24bits is definitely a step up from the crap sound of current DVD's.

Really though, on a *typical* home theater system can your average listener really tell the difference between Dolby Digital, DTS, and the new lossless TrueHD/DTS EX whatever formats?

In an absolutely perfect setup using incredibly high end stuff and with a trained ear I could see it. But in your typical thrown together home "theater" can you really tell?

Hell yes. The artifacts on a lot of DVD's are painful to listen to like a crappy MP3.

I'll rent them from Netflix, but what I'm really waiting for are Pixar and Miyazaki in 1080p.

It's only lossless until it goes through your DAC, then your preamp, then your amp, then your mediocre speakers, then bounces all over the room and eventually goes into your ears which are probably full of wax, then finds itself inside a little snail like structure that's full of shredded stereocilia, after which it proceeds to a grape sized structure that by age 60 whithers to half it's original density, and then maybe, if you're lucky, proceeds to your auditory cortex which with some luck has maintained integrity over the years.

Aside from all that, yea, lossless FTW :)

LOL at the answers so far...

But yeah, there are many much more deserving films that need to be released - even on DVD, much less a HD format.

The new SpiderMan franchise is a typical Sony product - slick, glossy, lacking substance.

It doesn't matter if most people can't tell the difference between lossless or not, good quality audio should be easily accesible, not for the rarified few. Its not our fault people spend too much money on crap speakers or just use their TV's speakers. Its not like the studio has much more trouble doing it either way, so there's no reason for them not to give us better quality.

So, I see all the Spider-Man haters are apparently morning people. Not that I'm going to defend the movies or anything.

It's not. Neither is the BD version. They will be released on October 30th; over two months away.
