HOLY CRAP: I think I may be 1 of the 11 in the US with SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome)!!!!

Right now I'm recovering to what my doctor diagnosed as bilateral pneumonia, but I'm still not feeling that great, and I'm getting more & more worried as I'm finding more info correlating my sickness to the recently highly publicized and dangerous severe acute respiratory syndrome. I don't have insurance, and I've already been to 2 hospitals in which I've managed to rake up about $10,000-20,000 in hospital bills. I know I'm feeling much better than I was originally, but I'm concerned that if I have SARS, it was probably not treated 100% properly and may somehow affect my health & recovery. I don't know what to do! Please read my story & tell me what you think:

Over spring break this past week I got deathly ill and ended up going to 2 different hospitals, staying in one of them for 2-3 days straight.
It all started out with a sore throat, and then I started to get a fever with bad cold chills (both symptoms of SARS), which rendered me quite weak especially since I was having problems downing food (another symptom). For 2 days I went on like this w/o getting proper care and just got sicker and sicker and weaker and weaker. The first day I did actually go to a hospital, but they were hasty with me & misdiagnosed my sickness. They spent like 5-10 minutes TOTAL on me by taking my vitals, temp, shining a light down my throat, and then promptly labeled my condition 'high fever w/ strept throat." They prescribed me strept throat medication (antibiotics) which I took for about a day and a half and simply got worse. Around the 2nd day or so my mucus production was insanely high, and I was constantly coughing up some nasty thick (w/ a tiny blood mixed in) mucus. That night I developed a constant cough & my breathing became extremely restricted to the point where I was not getting enough oxygen. I also had an insanely high fever, so that wasn't helping any. I was weak, very pale, sweating and hyperventilating & had my friends rush me to the emergency room. It hurt to even talk & I could not stop coughing & wheezing, so I had trouble speaking to the nurses & doctors.

They ended up giving me IV & pumped me with fluids (I was very dehydrated), antibiotics, & steroids. They also gave me breathing assistance through a machine, and gave me breathing treatments in the form of some bronchial dialator. After blood-testing and x-rays, they came back with the diagnosis of probable bilateral pneumonia. They told me I had to stay overnight as they treat me and give me more antibiotics. One thing that kind of struck me was that the doctor mentioned that my white blood cell count was particularly low (from the blood tests), and I think he might have mentioned my platelets as well, but I'm not sure.

Now after visiting this site about SARS, reading this is what really scared me:

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is a form of atypical pneumonia occurring in a person who has traveled to a country with an outbreak or come in contact with a person with SARS. SARS, the cause of which has not yet been identified, begins as an influenza-like illness, with such symptoms as rapid onset of high fever, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, dry cough and shortness of breath. X-rays show pneumonia and/or respiratory distress syndrome. Laboratory tests show low numbers of white blood cells and platelets. Many affected individuals have experienced respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation.

This as well, from the following site:
In some, but not all cases, this is followed by bilateral pneumonia, in some cases progressing to acute respiratory distress requiring assisted breathing on a respirator

Now I had x-rays & blood-tests taken, and:

1) X-rays came up with signs of pneumonia
2) Doctor said it looked like bilateral pneumonia
3) Doctor told me specifically that my white blood cell count was low

Additionally, as I said I had trouble breathing & was given oxygen through my nose on a respirator, I definitely had flu-like illness, cold-chills, headaches, & fevers...

I have not, however, gone outside the country nor am I aware of being in close contact with anyone who has. I live in NJ (where 1 of 11 cases of SARS was documented in the article) and was visiting Florida. What do you guys think? Should I be stressing out over this like I am, or am I over-reacting?

its mad cow disease...seriously...if you are that worried about it, and it sounds like you are, keep seeing doctors til you either feel better or are happy with their diagnosis

The problem is that I can't even AFFORD to talk to anymore doctors! Health care in the US is just absolutely ridiculous if you're not rich & don't have health insurance. The estimated bill for my long stay at the 2nd hospital was between 10k and 20k! I could frigggin buy a car for that much! They wanted me to stay longer & my doctor originally wouldn't release me, but I had a plane to catch. I can't imagine what the bill would be like if I stayed longer! Not only that, the antibiotics he prescribed to me, I bought today, and it turned about to be $50 for 6 pills! Argh, I'm being f'ed by our health care system!

They usually will, but that doesen't mean you aren't going to be charged for it.

That's insane, BTW... your hospital bills.

You should have them test to see what it really is.

they DO have to treat you, but you don't pay for their services until after they are rendered. If I don't pay up, my credit is screwed... that's how it works :(

If you are admitted to the emergency room, the hospital HAS to help you. It's part of the oath that doctors take which I'm sure I'll misspell. If you need an extensive procedure or a prolonged stay and are not covered in any way, shape, or form, there are people who can waive you into the medicare system. Indeed, these people are there to help you pay something to the hospital because many people will often rack up 100-200k in debt and then wait a year, which is usually when the hospital gives up trying to collect since the odds that you will be able to pay are slim to none afterwards and it just costs them money to beat a dead dog, so to speak. Trust me, seek out these people and let them help you. You'll receive better care and it won't kill your bank acct. Plus you can deduct medical expenses from your tax return if they amount to > 7 or 8 percent of your gross income I think.

Tho I agree, this country's healthcare system isn't the hottest... but it really does try.

Sorry, but I can't sympathize with someone who has their priorities as skewed as yours are. You were in a hospital where they were trying to help you and you left because you didn't like the bill. Hell, if I'm sick I don't care what the bill will be.

No bills and dead. uh huh.

Bills I can never pay and healthy. Yep, that's for me. I can always file for bankruptcy.

Don't MIND FVCK yourself either. I had an illness that exhibited certain signs of a form of cancer...I read about that type of cancer and its symptoms...lo and behold I started having those exact same symptoms, none of which I had before reading about them

Point being...the mind is a VERY powerful thing, dont get yourself all worked up if you can help it.

I didn't leave b/c I didn't want the bill. Did I have the concern of the possibility of a 20k bill over my head while I was there? Certainly... but I did not leave until my doctor released me, which he did b/c he obviously felt I was FUNCTIONAL enough to be released.

STEP - AWAY - FROM THE KEYBOARD!!!

Sheeeesh, what are you thinking? Bringing that infection in here like that! Don't even reply to this message. Just step away from the computer and go to the ER. There are 450+ users logged in here at any given time, what are you trying to do - kill all of us? ;)

I feel a cough coming on...

Hahhahahahaha

NO

Now you know why you should pay out of pocket for insurance right after you pay for shelter and food.

It's called the hippocratic oath...also known as the hypocritical oath to some.

Unless you have close contact with someone just came from Asia, don't worry about it.

as far so your 20K medical bill, YES, YOU MUST PAY.

most likely, you just pay too much for a bad flu, and it is ok, if I can pay 20k (or 200k w/o insurance) to save my life, I do it in a second.

He most likely got it from either people in the plane that had traveled to Asia or the plane environment that has been containimated.

Pff, 450+, no way. There's less than 150 on at the moment, so now's the least harmful time to do anything.
Come back later when there'll be about 650, then infect :p
