My parents told me they had a coin collection so I was thinking it was all probably some half dollars and stuff, but I was unprepared with what they showed me!!!! WOWSA!!! At least like 100 silver JFK half dollars (maybe 30 1964 90% silver), at least 200 silver dimes, 100 + old skool (even below 1900) full dollar coins, foreign old skool coins, like 50 buffalo nickels, and all these other old coins.....I dunno what to do with all this or how to get $$$ for it. I looked on ebay and some of them go for like $20-$50 bucks/coin. I saw a booker washington half dollar and all these otherones.......A roll of steel pennies........at least over 2K im guessin in here...prob more!

LOL! I just found some 20+ 1880 and beyond silver dollars. I think I might just save this stuff and keep it with my parents because I don't really need the $$$ right now. They didn't really care about it because they owned stores and they accepted old coins for face value and stuff and this is how their collection is so big, coz old people and stuff when they wanted cigarettes and didn't have money, would break open their collections....its quite sad......its all the cig. companies fault....LOL

Wow, that's amazing. I would be happy to have such a collection.... I would seriously keep it. It's value isn't going to go anywhere but up.

I read something recently that those steel pennies were really starting to go up in value. I would definitely hold on to those. My grandfather had a few of them, but once he passed away I don't know what happened to them. They definitely have high historical value already, but now the monetary value is starting to increase.

Keep it. If you sell it on eBay you're gonna have to get each coin individually graded.

That's pretty cool.

The number one thing to remember is not to clean them in any way. Like most collectibles, the condition is the primary factor in determining value. Most people who aren't familiar with coins overestimate the value because the coin they looked up on ebay is usually in better condition than the one they have. I'll give you an example. I have two 1963 half dollars - one is worth $10 and the other is worth $40. But if I showed you both, you (as a non-collector) wouldn't be able to tell which was which because the differences are very, very subtle.

Your 1964 Kennedy halves are worth about $2 each. The 1965-70 Kennedy halves are worth maybe a buck each. The silver dimes are worth about 40 cents each (all those figures are based on their silver value). If you have silver quarters, figure $1 each. Don't get your hopes up too much on the steel cents if yours have corrosion spots, as most of them do.

A good place to start is to borrow a book from your library called "The Guide Book of United States Coins". It has a red cover and is issued every year. You can look up the dates and mints of what you have to see if any of them are rare dates and worth more.

If you want help finding out more about your coins feel free to PM me. I'll be glad to answer your questions.

Cool dude, thanks for the info. I think I'll def. check out that book. BTW, if I don't plan on selling them right now, I don't think I'll look too much into them. yea, I guess those values are about right. I might be overestimating since all these coins were in circulation at one point. The ones that really get me are old, old ones from 1800s and stuff.

LOL! I actually witnessed that exact behavior. When I worked at a convenience store an old guy would come in and buy cigars with silver dollars (at that time, silver dollars were worth $15 each). I would buy them out of the register and in four months I had quite a few. I was going to quit the job so the next time I offered to buy the rest of the guy's silver dollars from him for $10 each instead of spending them for face value.

He declined!

I later found out that his wife worked (he was retired) and she forbid him to smoke cigars. To make sure he didn't smoke while she was at work, she made sure he had no cash. So he used the silver dollars instead.
